I always whack it into sport if I'm going to overtake someone.

So do I Rolling Eyes

On a long run with motorways I get better mpg with it in Sport mode than in D, which incidentally, contrary to popular belief, stands for dull Whistle

I sometimes use sports mode when on narrow twisty hills, either up or downhill, as it holds the gears longer and saves the box hunting; sometimes use command shift for similar reason.

ie- nothing to do with sport and speed, just more control over the vehicle and a more relaxing drive!

Never used it. Can't really see the point (well I've got an SD4 as well). Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

On a motorway journey, I used to travel to Heathrow and back weekly, 450 mile round trip, in Sport mode the car reacts more quickly and keeps up with traffic very easily, in D it would also keep up, such is the grunt, however, in Sport the mpg was better, I would get 20-25 miles more on the same journey.
I can only imagine that in D you're opening the throttle wider to get the speed and therefore using more fuel than if the box changes down and gets to speed faster?

Fast sweeping A roads, Sport is much better as it also changes down on deceleration at bends and is in a better gear when you arrive and drive through it.

Nearly always use sports mode on country roads, improves fuel consumption unless you are being silly, which I enjoy sometimes!!! All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.
