Can you buy gen 7 pin single socket dedicated tow electrics?

Hi all,

I called duckworths a couple of days ago and ordered some genuine tow electrics, I asked for just 7 pin as I'll just be towing a horsebox and flatbed trailer.. I never plan on carrying a caravan so I don't need the second socket..

Anyway it arrived today but I opened it and found it was the twin electrics.. I called duckworths (but Dan wasn't there), I spoke to the parts dept who told me that you can only get either the twin sockets or the 13 pin single sockets for modern caravans..

He said maybe I could just tuck it up behind the bumper.. But i don't really want to do that, I paid for genuine electrics so the job would be done right, I don't want to end up tucking it up in the bumper only for it to come loose in a couple of years and Catch the exhaust of floor and cause more issues, also the corrosion risk..

It seems strange to me that LR wouldn't make 7 pin electrics. It may be a case of sending this stuff back and buying non genuine dedicated electrics..
Any info would be great!

Thanks,

Yes you can buy genuine electric single 7 pin socket as I have one fitted. I am sure Dan will sort this out for you.

genuine LR tow electrics = very expensive.
But they are water resistant as they are properly sealed at cable entry points, not important to most, but if you do go wading it becomes important very quickly.
Had genuine stuff, replaced with cheap stuff after a rear end shunt, replaced with genuine stuff after wading. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

The reverse lights and lock are operated through the second socket so it is required to be present for the MOT now.

I would swap what you got for the 13-pin type as it is far more waterproof and the pins are designed to not snap with use. A 13 pin plug for your trailer will cost just a wee bit more than a 7-pin to 13-pin adaptor. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

The 7 pin sockets are not tested for the MOT. The 13 pin socket is tested and must be working for the MOT. Mine, Saab convertible

. . . but only for the road lighting bit, not the caravan/trailer feeds. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

so it looks like the only genuine tow electrics available are either 7 pin but with twin sockets for caravan, or 13 pin single socket..

I', disappointed, I dont ever plan on towing a caravan, but now have to put the electrics into a vunerable area, wether I use either option..

My other option is to use aftermarket dedicated electrics, but really wanted to stick to genuine..

so i'm stuck with fitting the twin sockets and probably tucking the white socket un into the bumper wrapped in a bag.. Yawn Sad MY2011 Freelander 2 GS Santorini Black

The adaptor to use your 7-pin trailer with the 13-pin socket is on ebay for £2.83 with free UK post.

I used PF Jones' dedicated 7 pin wiring kit - absolutely no problems installing or using on my trailer and/or cycle carrier and a fraction of the cost of OEM but still expensive for what you get No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

I'd go with the 13 pin OEM and a 13 to 7 pin adapter or a 13 pin plug wired for 7 on your trailer. Works for me with both a 13 pin caravan and a small 7 pin trailer.

13 pin plugs and sockets are far more robust than than the older 7n / 7s kit and I have a rubber push fit cover for the socket when not towing.
