I think that is utterly abhorrent and there should be a severe sentence for anyone who carries out that sort of crime. However, I also think that the person committing the crime is not the only who is guilty: society, parents, school, government, etc., need to be making more of an effort to erradicate any kind of anti social behaviour right up to heinous crimes such as this one. Off soapbox now, going for breakfast!

Clearly it is tempting to impose a severe, theatrical and righteous punishment. Severing the hand, boiling in oil etc all spring to mind, but really, as an advanced, civilised society, we shoudn't stoop so low as to adopt the practices of other, less-enlightened folk.
I would not be in favour of a punishment that meant an undue cost for the state (ie the honest taxpaler) so indefinite jail, although tempting, is too costly.
I would tend towards removing and ebaying all his property, leaving him with just the clothes he stands in, £5 for his next meal, then deny him any welfare, benefits, pension etc. He is clearly indifferent to the feelings of those around him so we should return that indifference. Indifference. That's the right punishment. Take everything away from him and remain indifferent to his pleas, needs and demands. ...

Be true to yourself. That way happiness lies...

Personally I don't think stripping them of all possessions is the way, however tempting it may be, it would only spur these people on to steal more. I think to really make an impact on crime it takes a joined up, coordinated effort by all parties as said before.
Interesting watching the Last Leg on Friday and their approach to ISIS where they ridiculed the organisation. Most of us probably feel powerless to affect the likes of ISIS, Al-Qaeda, etc, which most of us probably are, but if it makes us feel better then surely it is worth doing and will have a positive effect on society. I don't think it is always a physical or material means of retribution that is the solution to social malaise.

I tend to agree with piattj, that punishments shouldn't cost us, the taxpayer, undue amounts. There needs to be some way of making the penal service both self funding and with appropriate punishments.
I question why we give disqualified drivers another disqualification when they get caught again as they obviously didn't care about the original disqualification.
I also wonder about putting up the money grabbing MP's who've been caught with their snouts in the trough at our expense! I agree that they need punishment, but why should we pay for their bed and breakfast in HMP!
