Advice on Roof Rails - 2008 HSE

Hi All, im back into a Landrover after owning a BMW for the past 18 months.

I have purchased a 2008 Freelander 2 HSE with Panoramic Sunroof and ordered a Roofbox and bought some roofbars from another member on here without even contemplating the fact that the HSE has the Sunroof but no rails!!!

Ive seen these on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ink:top:en

A) wil they be ok with the sunroof and B) how easy are they to fit for a complete novice who was very proud of himself when he succesfully fitted clear indicator lenses on his Disco3!!!!

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks Current 2008 Freel2 HSE

Hi Chopper.

A) The rails will be ok with the sunroof (as it says in the ad)

B) Others have fitted the rails - you do need to take care - do a search on here, there is a step by step guide. Also there is a downloadable procedure on TOPix. In addition, there will likely be a PowerfulUK video on Youtube.

Cheers Bob, ill search for the fitting instructions. I was unsure whether the rails would be ok as there seems to be identical rails for sale that state they wont fit a Freel2 with sunroof. Current 2008 Freel2 HSE

There are two models - sunroof and non-sunroof. Sunroof model is slightly higher I believe, to allow clearance with roof open. (If I am wrong, I am sure someone will tell us!) Smile 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Paul, or anybody. Can you post a picture of the strengthening/cross bar as I'm unsure whether previous owner fitted it correctly as the thicker side is to the front?
Cheers Thumbs Up

Check an airplane wing next time you fly. Thankfully the thicker side is to the front Rolling Eyes 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

On the underside of the bar clamp fittings there is an arrow, at least on mine, & the instructions noted it as well, I made the assumption that the arrow was pointing to the front on the car. I was going to install it this way anyway as mentioned in previous post. The bar as far as I am concerned is a wing and needs to be installed accordingly.

The rubber gasket on top of the bar if the bar is installed forward should have the grooves angled to the back corners of the car. Not to the back centre of the car. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I fitted the aftermarket ones available on eBay.

Relatively easy to install if you have basic DIY skills.

The black coating on the brackets started to de-laminate after a short while. Supplier replaced them without any fuss, but it's happening again. It's on the surfaces facing inwards, so you can't really see it.

For them to be of any practical use, you will need cross bars. I got a pair of previously enjoyed ones from eBay. garioch43
