Diesel fuel is usually associated with black smoke, while blue smoke is oil burning. Only on startup suggests oil leaking along valve stems when engine is cooling and later being burned off on starting (also causes poor starting). Only guess is that the Shell fuel has a higher energy content and combustion pressure is now higher. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own! |

I thought it was burning oil, however it appears not to be using much if any. It's been in and out the garage having all sorts of test including a pressure test? I would like to think at 61,000 miles it's not the valve stem seals but I suppose time will tell. One source said that bio diesel can cause excessive blue smoke but who knows! Just thought I would mention it |

You will normally get blue smoke if you're burning oil when engine is hot. If you have oil in the cylinders (eg from worn valve guides) you will get a lot of crud coming out on starting but also get smoke when accelerating and a rapidly dropping oil level. I think what you were getting was unburnt diesel, which normally suggests a glow plug problem. However if changing the fuel type cures it it may just be, as suggested above, that the Shell burns easier. I once had the same problem from dodgy valve timing (loose keyway on one of the pulleys), but that must be pretty unusual. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Blue smoke on start up normally means the turbo seals are on their way out, but wouldn't explain the low mpg so I wouldn't worry about it. |
