Does anyone know if or how the panel or switches are removed, i have looked but can't find any info on it.

The reason for asking is that today i noticed the hdc switch was pushed down and didn't want to come back up, but did when pulled up.
I hope that it is just a bit sticky and if cleaned up will work properly again.

If you mean the switches by the gear selector then the 'lookalike' chrome just pulls off, slide the gator down and the pull the gear knob. There is a cable connector that you need to disconnect, that's it, quite easy. YouTube video somewhere.

Just noticed you have the auto so may be different?

No, it's the same way, just lift the chrome surround and it's there to disconnect  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

i have found the vid by powerful uk and looks easy to remove although from the glimpse of it the control box looks to be a sealed unit.
Also found on here the guide to remove the auto gear knob.
now just got have a little look at it in the next few days.

Just to follow up , I have been out and started with the easiest option of cleaning round the switch with it all in situ.
using a can of spray duster and a thin strip of plastic I got rid of a bit of fluff/dust/crumbs and now it seems to be working fine once again.
I also had a look at microcat and the tr/dsc/hdc panel is all one unit, part lr003775.
