Steering click/knock

I have recently noticed an odd noise from my steering at low speeds (2008 LR2 I6)... it mainly occurs when steering right. From outside it sounds like a click/crack noise, but inside it sounds like a muffled knock. Driving on full lock isn't pointing to any common CV issues. It's hard to tell exactly where the noise is coming from.

I installed new roll bar drop links and tie rod ends about 10k miles ago, so I'm assuming they're still okay... I've also tried loosening and re-tightening said parts. The noise doesn't occur when steering while stationary, and I can't identify any kind of wheel wobble. During normal driving everything is fine, until I slow down and maneuver.

I'm baffled by this. Any ideas from anyone?

Always pays to double check what you have done. With front wheel jacked, is there any movement if you hold the top and bottom of the wheel and see if here is any movement (rocking the wheel) . This would possible show if the wheel bearings need tightening.

Thanks for your reply - definitely no wobble in the wheels when the car is jacked up. I'm scared to question it, but could the steering rack be developing some kind of internal play?

I'm tempted to remove the drop links for a short time to see if it's roll bar related. Is it dangerous to drive a few miles (carefully!) without the roll bar connected?

I would suggest having it looked over by a LR garage if it worries or concerns you or at least a local garage. If they can spot the problem then you can either fix it yourself or let them do it.

I don,t know how things work in the USA but here in the UK when a car get 3 years old it has to have an MOT (ministry of transport) test to see if the car is road worthy or not. This covers everything from seat belts to exhausts. AS your car is 6 years old maybe a safety check is the way to go. Ok it may cost a few $ but what is that against peace of mind?. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

ry8000 - My car has recently developed a 'clunk' and appears to be through steering column at low maneuvering speeds with plenty of lock on, i.e. on and off my driveway and pulling out at junctions (left and right). No wheel wobble, power steering fluid is fine, no leaks. Could there be some kind of bush wearing in the steering linkage or column? Thought I was imagining it at first, as it's not very loud. At the same time I'm sure that very low speed turning on heavy lock seems tight/stiff, almost like the brakes are on or no power steering. Sounds similar to your problem, but I've no idea what it is either.

Car is steering correctly and is low mileage. Was GS TD4 Auto, Privacy, Santorini with Tundra & Alpaca, Cold Climate Pack. Traded for Discovery Sport HSE Auto.

Have you tried a Search? A few things to check, from Brake Pads to wheel nuts.

Finally got to the bottom of my problem! Took her to the dealer earlier this week and the technician immediately said it was power steering, the reservoir filter blocked and needed flushing and new filter (reservoir, as it's all one assembly). Took it in this morning and they flushed through and reassembled. It was still stiff steering so they said I deeded a new steering rack. This was quoted at £770+ inc vat and fitting, with no charge for work done so far.

However, I was aware of LR Technical Bulletin No 00272 (via another post on here) and my Vin was bang in the middle of those affected (weld spatter on rack causing swarfe generation in turn contaminating PS fluid and blocking filter, and damaging rack).

I complained that this was a defective part and that those vehicles potentially at risk should have had their fluid checked every couple of years for contamination. There is no PS fluid change or inspection at services!

I asked them to see whether LR could ease the pain, and they said they would ask.

When I got home, I was so wound up that I phoned LR Customer Services myself, and explained the problem and my thoughts on it. The guy was very receptive and said he'd see if anything could be done, and that he'd contact my dealer and then call me back regardless.

Less than ten minutes later he phoned back to say that LR were picking up the whole bill and that dealer had been instructed to directly invoice LR.

I was naturally over the moon, as my car is a March 2008 registered 32k mileage car, though she has been fully serviced by LR franchised dealers.

So, nothing to pay, fully valeted and a VERY happy customer. It is obviously worth sticking with the franchise for servicing. Was GS TD4 Auto, Privacy, Santorini with Tundra & Alpaca, Cold Climate Pack. Traded for Discovery Sport HSE Auto.

On mine it was a pronounced whine that got louder as steering was applied. Once the fluid got hot though, the whine went away completely. I too fitted a new reservoir, completely flushed all the old fluid out and refilled with genuine LR fluid. No problem since.

The whine started suddenly and was fixed within two or three hundred miles so hopefully rack damage has been averted.

Incredible though it may sound the clicking/knock I was getting was from the wheel nuts. It had been in the garage and no fault was found then I found this old thread: http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic9176.html...+end+noise

I took the wheels off, cleaned and sealed them, gave the wheel nuts a good soak in WD40 and then torqued them to the correct lb/ft. Then went for a long run, which would have normally caused the click, and no click. Very Happy Andyfr
