I think I'd rather buy a bigger trailer than risk trashing my car.

A skip might have been better - reduce the handling considerably by only lifting it once Very Happy

If you are going to do that, then the maximum weight is very near 300KG with the larger stones nearest the back of the front seats, I tend to carry a more enjoyable load namely wine, however with an almost empty tank and no OH this could be increased to about 400KG, but if no OH who will load? I would not be game in my new car!

I had a Peugeot 504 for 17 years which I installed air shocks on the back with an onboard pump. It took a few minutes to pump the shocks up to maximum.

Once I loaded the boot with 20mm blue metal for concrete, heavy material. I could not get another stone in, and the 504 has a good size boot with a fair bit of overhang! I did drive home very smoothly avoiding pot holes etc.

The car did not feel like it was overloaded other than the stopping distance, but I was driving slowly anyway.

I have no idea, and have not looked yet, if replacing the shocks with air shocks on the Freelander is possible. One would still need to drive carefully to minimise stress with overloading. But at least it would keep it's backside up at a respectable position so to speak!
