United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Santorini Black
Haldex ecu

I have a gen 3 Haldex and controller on my 2007 Freelander, 2, but the Haldex unit has a slipping clutch and needs replacing. I have the opportunity to get a new gen 4 Haldex without an ecu for a good price. My gen 3 ecu won't work with it, but does anyone know if a used gen 4 ecu can be reprogrammed to my car? A new gen 4 ecu is a lot of money to buy, but there seems to be a few secondhand ones around. Alternatively, anyone know of any good gen 3 Haldex for sale that is not LR prices?

Try to not mix the hardware and software.
In the end will cost you more than sourcing a working second hand Haldex 3.

As a side note, it can be done, Land Rover has migrated a limited number of vehicles (limited and specific VIN range) with Haldex 3 to Haldex 4.

There's a thought, how do you know it's slipping? Is there an easy way to test it?

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Santorini Black

Hi, sorry been away for a few days.
If I explain more about what the issue is, and then my problem, maybe it will be more helpful.
The better half has a 57 plate FL2 2.2 diesel manual HSE. A couple of years ago it started to get the dreaded error message Transmission fault - traction reduced. It was very intermittent and wouldn't show up ' on demand '. to our shame we didn't pursue it far enough in the early days. Now it comes on all the time, mainly on the second engine start of the day. If it doesn't appear within 10 minutes it will drive all day as long as the engine is not stopped and started, without the error ever appearing.
I took it to a 4x4 garage and they looked at the logs and it says slipping clutch in the Haldex. First of all they cleaned the Haldex filters, changed the oil and even put in another pump, but the fault remains. Their advice now is a replacement Haldex unit. Our freelander has a gen 3 Haldex (an Audi one, which was normal at times for LR). The 4x4 garage have some new Haldex 4 units they can sell to me at a very reasonable price, but they only have already used gen 4 ecu's. They have tried programming the ecu to our FL but cannot make it recognisable as its already been paired with another vehicle.
So I have two choices it seems.
1) buy a 'Virgin' gen 4 ecu to go with the new gen 4 Haldex they have
2) buy a gen 3 Haldex that works and use the original gen 3 ecu

I wanted to do it for reasonable cost ie not LR parts prices if I can.
I was looking for any further knowledge about re programming used gen 4 ecu's. IE anyone actually done it and can share the method with me and therefore the 4x4 garage? This would give me the cheapest solution.
Else anyone know of a good gen 3 Haldex I can buy?
If everything fails I will have to buy a new gen 4 ecu or gen 3 Haldex. I think either are big bucks.
Thanks to anyone who has an opinion or idea.

It's not the Haldex pump, it's the Haldex pressure and temperature sensor.
That needs to be replaced.
Search the forum for the information, for sure you'll find it.

Thanks Alex, I think they 'cleaned' the sensor when they changed the oil and cleaned the filters, but have no idea what cleaning a sensor might actually mean. Is it easy to replace the sensor myself if I buy one? It's a first step before committing to a full Haldex change. Are there any diagrams I can look at to see how easy it would be to change. The sensor (P/N LR003146) seems to be readily available for me to buy.
