United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Santorini Black

Side lights on in daylight is a bit pointless but not illegal otherwise all Volvos would be pulled over ( Idea lets make it illegal Laughing = no more Volvos)
Sides lights only pre-dusk makes sense but often this can lead to forgetting to put the main lights on as it gets a bit darker. So I for one just go straight to full lights. (in my truck which isn't auto lights). I do like to have my lights on earlier as there are a lot of nutters on fast bikes on the roads around me and I want to make sure they see me.

End result for everyone is main lights as soon as it gets dark enough so what's to worry/argue about? Do you want be to come around and bang your heads together?

Every time I drive the fl2 off the farm the lights come on due to it been dark in the garage but I have never noticed or really care when they go off. I just make sure I dip them if I left them on full beam. At work

It's the plonkers who drive with main beam on who get me annoyed. Some seem to think that because they are on the other side of the motorway it doesn't affect oncoming traffic.

For once I agree with C.G. (but not about Volvos Smile ). Also sidelights could be used if parked on the side of the road for a short duration.

Chill out guys I won't be lectured at by you (especially Dave/Avtur) how dare you accuse me of being a danger to anyone when you don't know me....

Sorry but I had to respond to that, I do 25k miles a year and made a genuine error as I simply did not know that using sidelights was illegal on the M'Way especially as my Dad's Volvo had this feature in 1985 and I see thousands using sidelights every day... it's not like I was using no lights or side lights in the dark whilst reversing down the M1 at 100mph with fogs on (when there's no fog of course) and hogging the overtaking lanes whilst talking on my mobile phone with a child on my lap...get some perspective!

Let's get back to the friendly debate and banter that I see daily please... this is a happy place in cyberspace!

Didn't mean to sound like I was lecturing but as I have a professional interest in driver training I feel very strongly about this, I cover about 30k miles a year myself. I have a particularly difficult task because I have to provide training to so called experienced drivers (HGV+ADR), and believe me that is a shed load more difficult than dealing with learner drivers (I have also been a straight forward DSA instructor). I say this with the greatest of respect but if you are covering that sort of mileage then your employer now has a duty to provide on going driver coaching/assessment. That is not meant to imply any lacking on your (or any one elses behalf) but a frienldy well presented one day session every three years can provide surprising advantages.

My only motivation for what I do at work, and posting here on this subject, is that having been a plod and pulled the remains of people from wrecked cars I have a passion for doing/saying anything possible to prevent it happening to other people. This is nothing to do with who knows more than anyone else, its ALL about being able to safely go about our day to day travel in our cars. On average every day there are more than 9 fatalities on UK roads, for the most part they are ALL avoidable, my mission is simply to help anyone I can from becoming one of those statisitics. Simple as that, sorry you took offence!
