My ancient PC has died and I have invested in a Lenovo PC with windows 8.1. Quite surprised how easy it was to setup and within 30 minutes i was up and running. Was really pleased to see the start menu on the desktop (option of desktop or app screen) however on the second time of switching on the PC i had to run a windows update which seemed to take forever, when that was done i know get an error saying my PC cannot find Pokkii and i no longer have my start menu button. So i can no longer open office excel or word because i cannot get onto the start menu - to switch off i have to go to the apps screen its an absolute nightmare. I have tried reinstalling pokkii but my PC tells me its already installed and running and i have right clicked the task bar and there is no mention of it there. Can anyone help! |

Can you not just restore back to before the update? |

Just checked, I'm using 'Classic start menu' which it says is a clone of older versions. So I don't know if windows have brought back the start menu yet. |

I used the Classic start but removed it when upgrading to 8.1. I have all my key apps on the task bar so no issue. |

having googled start menu for windows 8.1 there appear to be loads of different ones around but i dont want to end up messing up the computer as i not exactly a wizard on these things. I have located excel and word on the apps desktop and pinned them onto the taskbar but would certainly love to get the start menu back - progress what progress! |

I can recommend the 'Classic Shell' one. Like I say, once installed it's identical in use and appearance to the old windows versions.

I have got used to Windows 8 now, persevered and its paid off, my 11 year old daughter took to it instantly, it's intuitive for a different generation, we just have to get used to the fact that the future is for them not us.

getting used to it now knowing that i can get a sub-menu by going to the bottom left hand corner. Loving the speed, I switch it on and within 10 seconds its ready to use - my old pc took about 5 minutes!! |
