What Oil should I use?

The time has come to top up my engine oil, so I asked my stealer/service station what oil I should use Smile I was recomended and sold a liter of Castrol SLX Profesional 5W-40 Smile However when I looked in the Owners Handbook it stated that "Use only 5W-30 oil meeting Ford 913-B specification" Shocked Shocked Shocked
Can anybody advise if the oil I bought can be used and what is the difference between these two types Question 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

keep the receipt from the dealer to prove they sold it to you and don't worry about it

If anything went wrong (it won't) you can go at them over it Exclamation Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Have you tried the Castrol website? I think you'll find the specifications are listed alongside the marketing names.

Egde 5W-30
Magnatec 5W-30 C3

Would be really nice for us normal people to know just what oil we should use Big Cry
I for one do not know what the difference between 0W-40 and 5W-30 C3 is and more to the point I dont realy care as long as I get the right stuff in the Censored sump! Whistle 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

I have changed my oil after about 12,500 km - and used Shell Ultra Helix 5W-30. It agrees with the list supplied by YF.

One of the most important things to check is if you have a dpf. If you do - then consequently you need an oil suitable for dpf engines. The above Shell oil is dpf approved.

I would expect that the info on the back of the Castrol will advise if it is suitable for dpf engines.

Hope that helps a little.

The oil symbols 0W/5W - 30/40 advise the viscosity at low & high temps.

Viscosity is a measure of the "flowability" of an oil. Water has a low viscosity & honey a high viscosity. Meaning - it is the property of an oil to develop and maintain a certain amount of sheering stress dependent on flow and then to offer continued resistance to flow.

Thicker oils usually have a higher viscosity, and thinner oils a lower viscosity. This is the most important property for an engine. An oil with too low a viscosity can shear and loose film strength at high temperatures. An oil with too high a viscosity may not pump to all the engine areas at low temps eg when you are starting a very cold engine.

Also the numerical difference between the symbols (0W-40 = 40, and 5W-30 = 25) indicates the stability between the cold and hot temps - meaning 5W-30 behaves more consistently than 0W-40.

My advise is to wait for YF to comment !

Thanks for the info Jimmy Very Happy
I just asked at another LR stealer/service station about oil and they told me that it is no problem to use the SLX Profesional 5W-40 which is thinner and more expensive oil but which they do not use themselves for FL2 use Shocked . When I asked what they used they told me Castrol PXT 5W-30 Shocked . No mention was made as to if I had a dpf fitted or not (which my FL2 has) and unfortunatly I forgot to ask Sad .
All these numbers and names for oil has got me even more confused, so I think I will just pour the stuff in and hope for the best Laughing No wonder the stuff costs a Censored fortune to buy Big Cry with all these choices, in the old days of do-it-ya-self I used Castrol GTX from Halfords - one synthetic choice for all cars only the vicosity to consider Thumbs Up Maybe high tech has gone too far with oil at least Question 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Glad to help !

As mentioned - the info on the back of the container will say something about whether it's suitable for a dpf.

So - if you like, you can have a quick check before you pour it in Thumbs Up

Just had a check of my oil and time to have a little top up, checked on the castrol website using the reg details and it came up Magnatec 5w30 -A1!!!!!! Seems there all slightly different!! But it falls into the 5w 30 that i was told to use!!! The dealer did say that if i was ever passing and needed it topping up they'd do it for nowt!!! Set low standards and constantly fail to achieve them!!!!!!!!!!!

From what I can gather the 913-B spec is quite low and in my experience isn't difficult to find (in UK). The 913-B should be found on the packaging with all the brand details.

Regards the Castrol website I just put my details and find the recommended oil is Magnatec 5W-30 A1 (as Jimbojay above), and following the links a bit further find that that Magnatec 5W-30 is Ford 913-B compliant

Looks like the SLX might be an old product name possibly replaced by 'Edge'

Thanks for the reply(s) - I asked in another local autoshop that sells Castrol and they also told me that SLX is replaced by Edge Rolling Eyes
In anycase being totaly confused I added half a liter of the SLX and we are still motoring Laughing
When I get my first oil change I will ask what they put in and get a liter extra for topping up. I cant understand why there has to be so much confusion about an oil - maybe its just me worring a bit too much Question However when it was mentioned that an FL2 with and without particle filter (dpf?) specifly different oils I just gave up Big Cry Big Cry 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Andy: to clarify the matter: any engine will consume (burn) a certain amount of motor oil. When normal motor oil is burned it will clogg the DPF (diesel particulate filter) on the long run as such motor oils do have a relatively high ash content -much higher than diesel-, and you may at one point of time face the expensive replacement of your DPF. Motor oils developed for diesel engines with DPF have a verly low ash content, and will therefor not clogg the DPF when burned. DPF recommended motor oils are Shell Helix Ultra "E" (for emission) 5W30, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W30 (ESP=emission system protection) Aral Super Syn 5W30 and others. As per my knowledge, Castrol does not have any DPF appoved motor oil in its program.
The Landrover recommended oils as per Ford norm 913 B (so called A1-oils) ARE NOT suitable for DPF engines!!!

Hi YF - Thanks for the info - its all a bit confusing for the layman Whistle .
I asked at the dealers service dept. where I purchased the car and they said they use Castrol TXT Softec 5W-40 oil when servicing FR2's -I could not even find that type on the Castrol website Shocked .
However armed with your useful information I will confront them at service time and demand that they refill with a oil type that is sutible for the FL2 with a DPF Thumbs Up . 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
