Calling all crankshaft oil seal victims

Hi, I would like to hear your experiences with regards to crankshaft oil seal issues. I know that there are a few posts relating to this but I don't think there are any showing how people have got on after their seals were replaced. I would like to know:
1. If you have had the oil seal problem;
2. When did you get it fixed;
3. Has the issue reoccurred - if so, how many times, how long did the remedial work last for;
4. Who fixed it;
5. Was it replaced with a LR oil seal or Peugeot;
6. Is there anyway to prove liability - manufacturer or installer; and
7. Any other relevant points you may think of.

My story is - I bought 2007 FL2 TD4 HSE 70k mileage a few weeks ago with FSH, but not knowing that issues can reoccur (stupidly? I thought when things are fixed, they are fixed), the crankshaft oil seal on my FL2 was replaced exactly 2 years ago in September 2012 by a LR garage/dealer. I took my FL2 to my local LR garage (different to the one where the initial repair was carried out) to look at the wheel bearing as I rightly suspected this was on its way out, the mechanic said that my crankshaft oil bearing has gone again as it was leaking oil. I have a 'full' 2 yr warranty with the FL2 but I am not certain if oil seals are covered yet (will find out later!). So the reason for the post was to hear peoples experiences with having oil seals replaced and how long they lasted for as I intend to keep the car for at least 5 yrs and don't want to pay for this every couple of years. I would like to know if it possible to get a 'permanent' fix or is this issue going to reoccur during the time I will own it. Does anyone think that if I am not covered by warranty that there should be some liability, somewhere (not mine of course! Embarassed )? I would say (if it is at relevant?) that my driving style is laid back (others might say pedestrian, but that is up to them Shocked )

For DPF cars, a reason for seals failure is due to excessive regenerations. Oil is mixed with diesel and in time the seals are getting stiff.

Hi Devondale, yes read and conversed on that post. It appears that the only way you can check that plug is by taking the gearbox out.

Atlas, does taking the DPF off affect the emissions? Please excuse me I am not a mechanic, unfortunately!

My car had a DPF fitted and is a 2007 model. Regarding the emission test check google.

Thanks, looks like I am ok to remove the DPF, if I have one! This may prevent the problem reoccurring, I am not quite yet convinced on the longevity of the solution. May be others have experience that they will hopefully share.

England 

Doubt if you have one on a 2007 model, only became standard on UK Spec for MY10, was an option till then.

It mentions. DPF in the manual, so presumably I have one. Something else interesting on closer reading of the 'fish': oil seal replaced Sept 2012, garage noted 'oil on under tray and lower engine' in Nov 2012. I think I need to speak to the garage as it does not detail what was done but there was a £490.00 charge Shocked I will have to stop using the word garage and start using the more common vernacular used here, 'stealer'!

The manual is generic.
Your oil seal should last for many years unless of course the crankshaft itself has worn out of tolerance, oil seals will wear metal .

If it has got a DPF fitted and you remove it, it will fail the MOT test.

2007 UK specification diesel Freelander 2's do not have DPF.
