United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black
Headlamp reflector vs Projector Nighbreakers & HID Xenon

Just thought I would share my experiences as it might help another owner.
My Freeley is 2010 and came with Reflector Headlamps. First mod was to install 4 x H7 Osram Nightbreaker Plus bulbs, (unlimited not on the market at the time). Very happy with the improvement. Dip beam is a bit fuzzy as regards the definition between the illuminated low dip beam and what should be black above it, side to side dip is also a bit indefinitive.
.
Second mod, I bought a pair of 2011/2012 projector headlamps and fitted these with the Nighbreaker H7’s to the mainbeam, (dip beam is H11’s). I rather liked the improved Dip, it has a very clean cut low dip illumination compared to the black above it. The side illumination of the kerbside is very helpful where we live in the countryside.
.
Third mod I bought an aftermarket HID Xenon kit of 35w and 4300 Kelvin so as to mimic the factory watts and colour. Quickly fitted, I even took full photos as I was to add a post on the ‘how to’. What a disaster, the beam was like a pencil and streaky, it also had fuzzy illumination on dip ABOVE the cut off line where it should be black. I got flashed many times by oncoming motorists. After the second night, (when we were followed home by the Police to within ˝ mile of home), after breakfast I took the kits out. My thoughts are that the burn spot of the long Xenon ‘bulb’ is so far forwards of the burn spot of an original bulb that the optical effect is to scatter inside the parabolic reflector hence the non definitive pencil beam.
.
Fourth mod I have bought and fitted the Dip beam Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited H11 bulbs.
Highly pleased with the end result, nice bright white illumination, good light to the left kerb for our country lanes and a longer beam than standard bulbs. Ive tweaked the manual beam adjust a fraction downwards.
.
For the fifth mod I want to try replacing the dip beam deflector wall inside the parabolic reflector unit with a sheet of mirror stainless. The standard steel is like a matt zinc plate so will absorb the light causing heat. I do wonder though if it might cause scatter again like the aftermarket Xenon. Has anybody got a 2011/2012 module from a UK broken headlight that I could do trials on?
.
Kind regards from Fred

Hi Mark, the third mod was a disaster ; it was the mod that I removed. The bulbs were aftermarket HID with H11 lugs.
DIS bulbs are OE and need OE Dis bulb holder / elliptical reflectors from an OE DIS headlamp.
.
Please don't think about aftermarket HID they are an aftermarket con.
.
Please either use nightbreakers or buy OE xenon full headlamps.
.

I've got a pair of genuine LR Xenon headlights I must sell. They throw a great beam. Thumbs Up

How much would you be wanting for them?

And where abouts are you?

Cheers
