Thank you for your observations pporocki. I am totally in agreement with you, and like Tradewind 35, I have had a look at the Subaru Forester which will shortly be available with a diesel auto. What are other members' thoughts about the DS' instrument cluster? I think the dials are too small, and that the silvery markings on the speedo and rev counter are particularly unattractive.

Having driven one a couple of times I can't say it caused me any concern, never look at the speedo I look at the digital one as I did on my Evoque, Fl2 and D4.

Tradewind, I supose that's why the Discovery lost its Land Rover lettering and Defender also Rolling Eyes

I don't get all this " its not a proper Land Rover " garbage

I think people may be saying its not a proper land rover, as if you took the badges off a Defender, Discovery, Freelander 2... most people will still be able to tell what it is. I feel if you did the same the with the DS the general public probs would not be able to tell what it was / is make wise let alone model

My comment about car parks I feel to be true but only time will tell, when I am in a car park its so easy to look around and go Discovery over there, RR over there, Fl2 There, there and there, as they stand out with their shape and roof line look Thumbs Up

Don't get me wrong I think the DS will sell in numbers as its made to do so, I just don't think they will hold there money, as it looks like to many other brands ( in my own opinion ) Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

But now we could order In Control Apps and handle this problem! Very Happy

I really don't understand why command drive position has gone.
I've took this photo after I had test drive.
Frontal dimensions are similar. DS doesn't look smaller at the front.
Driving position is much worse.
I am wondering what is decisive factor.

My 2011 Freelander looks very old car next to the new Discovery Sport.
Disco sport has nice fresh look at the front. I like it. Frontal look, not DS Smile.
But at the side view it looks smaller the same as it is (haven't photo).

Please note that I've parked with a little askew and front "axis" of Freelander is about 3-4inches farther.
And the photographer isn't located at the centre of scene (red line)

Maybe this photo would be more useable if taking it from lower level above the ground. As I said I am tall.

My GMFV on my DS is £20k after 3 years on a £40k HSE Auto. I am expecting a £400/month loss, same as my FL2. 2010MY Freelander 2 HSE Auto

I think Offshore1987 makes some good points about the lack of LR look & appeal in the DS. I'm beginning to feel that this vehicle is a natural replacement for many Evoque owners who now find that vehicle just too small or lacking in flexibility.. After all the Evoque is also more of a car than any other LR vehicle. In that context I imagine they will sell lots of them.

So perhaps not surprising that so many FL2 owners are confused, or still waiting for suitable replacement LR vehicle; for them the DS fails on too many significant points. A great shame! Life is not a dress rehearsal!

I popped into a dealer I have bought from before today just to chat with the same salesman & he let me have a drive in the DS. It was an HSE auto.
I tried to raise the drivers seat only to find it was at it's highest position Shocked . 1st impressions of the drive is a cross between a FL2 & Evoque which he said is what their aim is, accelerated very well & less thrashy/noisy than the Freelander. we went round a small roundabout & I asked if I could drive it hard into the corner. It handled that very well just like the Evoque & much better than a FL2 but the FL2 is taller etc so it should.

Ingenium engine he said should be near the end of this year but initially in 2WD.

2 extra seats for me would be just pointless but played with the folding of them & the row 2 seats to see what loadspace was like & it is a better scenario than I thought.

Had a play with the screen, SD sat nav seems fine to me. Didn't test the standard audio so can't tell if that was naff compared to my 825 Meridian but no way would I pay £2500 in a DS to get it along with a TV that unless you keep the engine running while parked you can't watch etc, but that is the same as Evoque & many others.
Don't like the cheap hard plastic at all around the centre console areas. I said to him this is just nasty.

Would I buy one = No. Nice car but not got the wow factor the Evoque had when I first saw that in 2011 & as I said to the salesman I can see these dropping in value fast when new engines arrive so on that point alone I wouldn't buy. At least the present engine I have in my FL2 was designed for that car so it has aged with it. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

You make some valid points, but I disagree with the plastics, they are supposed to be harder wearing but in fact are the same used through out the range, to me anyway, it felt like I was sitting in a solid well put together product.

On to the engines, I don't think these Ingenium engines are going to be as great as they say, initial reviews of the Jag XE 2.0D aren't glowing, it's gruff when pushed and intrusive when idling, but JLR did say there was still work to be done.

I do find it amusing how some Fl2 owners are struggling with the driving position, I'm coming down from a D4 (proper Land Rover) and thought I would struggle with the low slung driving postion but it was fine, excellent drive compared to the D4. I do understand though, at work we are getting new inter-deck coaches and there driving position is the same as a people carrier very low and can't see over the vehicle in front unlike our current ones, it will take some getting used to. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

I suppose being an EX Coach & Bus driver I am used to and like a high driving position, even my Fiesta ST I can get a high position. I didn't dislike the DS driving position but having just got out of my Freelander it felt squat. I dare say there isn't much difference to the Evoque but I like to see the front end of the bonnet on any car.

RE the dash plastics, probably no worse than the stuff around the Freelander I guess but we are used to that & the DS being an all new car & more expensive it looks a little like the Seat Toledo I valeted a couple of weeks back. I realise they have to differentiate between a Range Rover but on an all new model & with the profile & money JLR now have I just feel it is a bit of a cheap finish.

When I was in the showroom looking t the HSE Lux & fiddling with the rear seats the salesman did say as I went round the passenger side that he thought another viewer had broken one of the adjusting latches so I may not get it in the right position.
I couldn't see any evidence but if that is the case then I suspect poor quality as if that happens in a showroom imagine when out in the pouring rain when occupants are in a hurry!! (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

That's quite a valid scenario Nick, hadn't really thought of that, I wonder then if the next Discovery big, or whatever, will be the car that Freelander owners are tempted into?
There is certainly potential to have two Disco models in the same way they have with the Range Rover, ie. Standard and LWB, there's an interesting thought.

The salesman I spoke to did give the indication that the DS was partially aimed at Evoque owners who wanted more space etc. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

There will be Evoque XL. So why Disco Sport is such Evoque like?

I guess (nightmare) then in a ten years Land Rover will be like a german car's manufacturers.
Many models without any fundamental differences between them.
All models will be the same character and look, and you will able to choose only the car size.

The colleague of mine (VW fan) was really surprised when I showed him Land Rover products a few years ago. All of LR models were such different cars with not only different look but different characteristics. It was surprise for him.

Not only do the models have the same look. I'm hard pressed to tell the difference between manufactures. It really became apparent to me when looking to purchase a new car at just how poor I was at telling the difference between makes.

I just hadn't been looking at cars for 2 decades as the old one refused to die. 2 years ago when I started moderate looking, & 2 months of serious looking, I quite often had to look at the logo to remind me which car I was actually looking at. Even getting it wrong at which showroom we were in.

It's pretty sad when the other half says that model looks ok and looking at its ar-- (car) for ground clearance, we both get it wrong!

Currently one can tell a LR from a 1000 paces. Between manufactures it's getting difficult to differentiate from 10 paces! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
