It would have to be damn good to beat a G Wagen, although they, realistically are way over priced for what you get, novelty cars for those with more money than sense, make excellent second hand purchases though with Diesel engines, if it's a 5.5 petrol, it'll kill your wallet dead. |

Brixmis also used Range Rovers, but they got smashed up a lot and I'm guessing it was easier to source spares for the Geländewagen in Berlin.

Except of course for the couple of people who died during them. While the big boys generally played ball, the DDR soldiers could be very nasty. In one case watching an American bleed to death while holding his mates at gunpoint to stop them helping him. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

You can see the G Wagen at Chicksands (http://www.militaryintelligencemuseum.org/). Good museum, worth a visit. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone) 08 FL2 TD4 SE Manual in Rimini Red (Now Gone) |

One of the pictures on the website shows the G-Wagen bogged down to the wheel hubs. Wouldn't have happened with a Landie... Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Sadly they binned the RRs as they were too unreliable & prone to damage. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Interesting read Taz, but seems to completely ignore the elephant in the room - wherever you go in the third world, it's not a Merc you see, it's a Toyota (or, as I've found in some places, a VERY old Series Land Rover) Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Here's the details. Not quite as I was told it however. The online info states Nicholson was shot by a Soviet soldier. The version I had (from a Brixmis veteran) was that he was shot by a female East German guard.
