hard saying goodbye to my beloved Freelander

Yes not long now until it leaves me for hopefully another owner who will look after it as well. Bit like saying goodbye to a faithfully and loyal reliable friend. Yep 1 Sept is getting closer and closer so no more filling up the fuel tank full-no more cleaning inside and out.

Hope My new Nissan Xtrail Tenka is just as good. Have to be honest, if the Freelander was cheaper to run there is no way would I part with it, but with £100 insurance price rise in under 12 months partly due to moving house is a bit too much and that is the only reason for getting rid of it . It has had the Annual service by a main dealer from new and only just under 23500 miles since March 2010 so it is still like a new baby. Yes I know the cost of a new car well outweighs the running costs of the freelander but the new car purchase is paid for by the difference from selling my business and home so in actually fact no financial loss to personal income.
So out with the not so old and in with the new Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Too bad...

I have a hard time following your logic.
Buying a new car is from a financial point of view the last thing to do...

I can't get my head around it either, I hope you weren't an accountant Laughing

For the sake of £100 you have invested in a foreign mark, I doubt it will give any sort of emotive experience, it's an oriental box designed to get you from A to B, that's it, your loyal and reliable friend dumped for the price of a meal out.

Confused Confused.

I tend to only keep a car for about 3/4 years anyway but yes logically it doesn't make sense. However when your nearly 70 years old and worked hard from the age of 15 a little self indulgence doesn,t do any harm.

That includes 21 years of no time off apart from 2 weeks a year, Wife and I worked 7 days a week for 50 weeks of the year including ALL bank holidays

Skiing is not on my agenda, my children have been bought up to earn their money same as I had to hard times and easy times.

Whether a Honda or a Freelander, they prices will have increased with a house move as the new area will have an effect on any car

I appreciate the Nissan might be able to be run on a lower budget as I think it has better mpg but I think the residuals will be worse in X years compared to a FL2 Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Except I am not getting a Honda, had one of those new and terrible lack of power with their CR-V got rid of that it couldn't go uphill in the peak district without having to drop down to 2nd gear. Absolutely gutless motor.

I keep telling my dad to sod any inheritance, it's his money he has earned, driving round in a Merc with a holiday every month makes me really really happy Neutral

Please do keep coming back and report on your findings, it's good to have subjective feedback on other marques Thumbs Up

Thanks Taz

I would love to do a comparison if no other members object. This is such a friendly site I would love to stay a while at least.

Yes I can be controversial at times because I like to speak my mind and if I disagree I say so. At least it makes members respond getting their point across

The Nissan forums the managers have not been active for years so one can,t join, or at least that is what I have found

On of the reasons for the change is the Nissan having 7 seats, great for when my son and family come to stay we can all go out in one car, something we can't do in the Freelander. Not many crossovers or 4x4's have 7 seats unless you start looking at Toyota Landcruiser or something like, well out of my price bracket.
The Nissan Squashy had 7 seat up to recently but now doesn't.
Residuals on this new Nissan X trail are supposed to be comparable with most makes on a percentage basis, according to reports I have studied

Financially having just spent nearly around £0.5 million on a house including moving costs and up grade with a good bank balance and a good pension The spend on a new car is not that much. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

When you reach my age one tends to let things go over ones head (including aircraft)

When I have done this before on other car forums I do try and be objective pointing out the good and bad points usually after having given the new car a good time to get used to.

If one is going to do a comparison one can give only ones opinion and each has do decide for themselves if it is fair or not.
One thing that is different already noticed is with breaking. Foot on brake on the Nissan and the brake stays on, and to release just put foot on accelerator. The handbrake is a switch small lever on the centre tunnel just below the dashboard. That also gets released when starting to pull away. Don't know how or what happens yet if one want to just release it, something I have to find out but presumably just push the lever/button again. Everything being electronic is quite a change from the freelander so that is one area I will be looking at bearing in mind I have a Manual Freelander GS where the stop/start feature is questionable depending on battery and if aircon is on which I have mentioned before on a previous post.

So yes no doubt there will be over time a fairly comprehensive comparison, maybe not all at once but as Ii find as I go along Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

I was just thinking (yes it does hurt). Why not have a section on other makes of 4x4 as well. That would allow me and others to post without upsetting the main reason for the forum.

OK not a good thought (but I used a well worn brain cell to come up with that one ) Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Laughing yes opening the floodgates having a separate topic.
If it's a comparison then no one should object, if it's a blatant " this is better" then Nick and I will get flack and then you will get flack Laughing

Going back to the handbrake issue, I now have the electronic type, personally, I find it much better, although having an auto doesn't always necessarily mean I need it or use it, it's not automatic type on the FL2 yet so easily could be, there will be a reason it isn't, be it cost or design. The LRE at Coniston asked me to perform a failed hill climb in a Freelander by quickly selecting reverse and let the engine do the work, if the handbrake had come on it may have interesting. This is also one reason why the small selector dial isn't favoured for off road use, it's far to easy to select park and lock up the wheels, although in a panic it is also easy to slam the lever straight into park, the staggered gate design on say, a Merc, helps in that respect.

No it would be a comparison. Things like ride comfort- design- ease of driving-turning circles - towing ability -ease of rear access and amount of room- customer service and the like.

good and bad points I think about both marks, there are bound to be some on both, No way would I say for example "you should get this because it is far better that on the other make" that is so unfair.
Yes my personal preference could have an influence but I have always tried to be impartial in other reports I have done. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner
