Volcano: Looks like my big holiday is down the pan

I just don't Censored believe it! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-28913165

The bloody thing picks now to erupt when I am flying out next Friday. Only underground lava eruption at this stage but the ash is inevitable I guess. From looking at the jet stream forecast, the winds will blow it this way but the winds are forecast to blow north from Tuesday and that is my only hope.

The decision as to whether or not to fly now rests with the individual airlines as opposed to a blanket ban by the authority and they claim to be well prepared this time.

3 years I've been planning and saving for this holiday. I feel sick Sad

Trying to calm down now after my initial knee jerk rant above. Huge lessons were learned after 2010 and the CAA now allows planes to fly in low to medium density ash. The strong jet stream that brings the bank holiday wash out can only be a good thing.

2010 was bad because the jet stream blew constantly and strongly south east and straight at the UK and Europe. Just got to keep praying now...

Re route via Miami or Atlanta instead of the direct flight which uses the far N.Atlantic flight paths. Do the re routing now before the rush starts Idea

(you may already be too late - either that or your flight ticket conditions and/or airline will not permit you to do so)

It's ok, the planes will simply fly a different route or offer some alternative. They have all stated to the press that they are well prepared this time. The jet stream is now the crucial element... LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Since when has the airline industry have ever been well prepared - statements to the press - junk food for the masses, just like their on board catering.

Big sigh of relief for now as the alert is lowered to orange and an eruption did not occur yesterday afterall. Still keeping fingers crossed for a favourable jet stream just in case.

24th August 2014 11:50 - notes from scientists
Earthquake activity in NW-Vatnajökull is still very strong, 700 earthquakes have been observed since midnight and they are somewhat larger than previous days.
Two large earthquakes, over 5 where in the Bįršarbunga caldera this night.
The activity under Dyngjujökull has propagated northwards and is now mostly under the edge of the glacier, where an earthquake of size 4,2 was recorded this morning.
The dyke under Dyngjujökull is now estimated to be approximately 30 km long.
There are no indications that the activity is slowing down, and therefore an eruption can not be excluded.
Observations show that a sub-glacial eruption did not occur yesterday. The intense low-frequency seismic signal observed yesterday has therefore other explanations.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office has decided to move the aviation color-code from red to orange. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Scotland 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Stornoway Grey

Hoping this doesn't blow up in the next three weeks as i'm due to travel offshore three times. Last time they resorted to boat transfers to get some people home, not nice in the North Sea.
Others were quite happy to stay onboard until it cleared, and it was referred to as the 'Volcanic Cash Cloud' Laughing

A small eruption has started but no mega ash at the moment. I am at the airport now in a lounge just waiting for our flight at 11:15. With the wind blowing north, all clear for flights.
