Starting oddly / glow plugs / Battery

Evening all

Now its starting to cool down the truck seems to more and more start oddly, fires up and revs to 800rpm then judders and drops to say 600rpm then back to 800 and so on, sometimes alittle smoke and sometimes none Question

Firstly I was thinking it might be a injector but after reading many threads im starting to think it may be a glow plug gone duff? Once you drive away it sorts its self out and then all is fine until the engine goes cold again, would this seem like a plug problem to yourself?

Also would a not so great car battery show signs of something like this happening, if when starting the plugs are sucking the power out of the battery till the altinator fires up and puts power back into the battery?

Its alittle confusing as use to pre heating the glow plugs on defenders and It seems that the freelanders glow plugs only heat once the engine is started?

Thinking that it might be the plugs I got a quote from keith gotts to change all 4 for around £215.00 inc vat, would this seem about right? I know the parts arnt to dear but im guessing its a few hours work?

Plus whats the price of a new freelander battery come in at?

Anyone with any input would be greatful

Sounds like glow plugs to me. Personally, I'd check them before removing and if only one or two are duff, I'd just change those ones. Easy to test - disconnect individual wires and using a 12V test probe connected to battery positive, touch the probe on the glow plug terminal. If it lights up it's okay, if it doesn't it needs replacing. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Guessing there is no way to test them other than removing the engine cover and rocker cover? It is a job I might try myself but not overly sure on how to Laughing

Plugs them selfs seem to be average of £12 each

Not replaced any on a Freelander myself yet but done plenty on other cars. As long as you can disconnect the wire on each plug you can test them. I have read that the one behind the fuel filter is the worse to get to but hopefully it'll be one of the easier ones to remove - there's nothing worse than struggling to take an awkward plug out to find out that it's okay! If there's a really awkward one to get to, leave it connected to the cable but make sure the cable is not earthed or connected anywhere (other than the glow plug you are testing) or you will get a false reading. They can be easier to remove from an alloy head if the engine is warm so warm the engine up before you disconnect and test them. Thumbs Up Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

The glowplugs come into play by measuring the coolant temperature and only if below 5 degrees centigrade, I very much doubt this time of the year if they are used at all.

The more likely culprit could be the EGR valve is stuck open caused by carbon build up, failing that an injector problem.
