3M Clear Bra and other protectants

Hi all,

Just curious if any of you have tried products like the 3M clear bra protection film to keep the rock chips and such off the of front of you cars.

I'm 99.9% sure I'm going to have it done to mine at a cost of around USD$500.

Any thoughts or experiences?

The kit would be similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Rover-2011-2012-Clea...B008PS0TQO

i have seen cars with them on, however they were not LR's

They are not invisible, you can see them, but you would need to way up the options again costs and length of time your planning on keeping the LR and its uses

Whats the cost difference compared to a respray, of the front end, would a hard stone chip pierce the film, resulting in a respray, are you going to be off road and will the film offer any protection against tall bush scratching too

Myself, i would put money to better use, depending on the amount of stones on your roads, in 5 years i have a few, but no more than i would expect on a 5 year old car Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I had a sports car re-sprayed once and then had a product called Venture Shield professionally cut and applied to the front end, bonnet, front wings sills and rear bumper to protect it, which it certainly did, zero stone chips on the front 3 years after being sprayed, it would have be peppered with out it.

You yourself will know its on there and you will notice it all the time but from four or five feet other people won't notice it unless you point it out to them or it has an obvious join \ edge on a curved panel where they couldn't use a single piece to cover it or they go in close for a look. I had people standing in front of it at shows who never knew it was on there until I said something, then they lean in close and can start to see it. I did have a darkish blue car which helped though, it'll probably be more noticeable on something like a white car.

The problems are where it doesn't get folded around panels but has an exposed edge, these will either go white from polish residue or black from grime build up. If bird crap is left on it, it will make a dull patch which I was never able to remove, (but your paint underneath will be fine if you ever take the film off).

I thought about having it done to my freelanders front end but haven't yet, the problem with the Freelander is the clam shell bonnet, then bonnet doesn't need it apart form the front strip where the emblems are. I can't decide if the piece they have that in the kit that fits over the letters would be a right pig to fit and line up or not. But it will have a noticeable edge running across the bonnet.

Bonnet aside the front nose is definitely worth doing. Are you fitting it yourself or is someone else doing it for you? There is a bit of an art to it but its fairly forgiving stuff and you can keep peeling it off and applying more solution and squeegeeing it into place and using a hairdryer to make it stick. I bought some VentureShield square sections online for my motorbike, cut and applied them. It took a few bodged attempts before I got it good enough.
