Removing rear halfshafts - the inner part ... how

As per the title really. Considering taking on the job of the low level repair on the diff.

Looking at the manual, it says that you disconnect the halfshaft from the wheel hub - no big issue. Then you put some sort of tool on the inner part of the half shaft ...



If you don't have the tool, then what is it that the tool does that I need to replicate ?
