Both Freelander and Defender have the same wading depth of 500m in static water. The air intake on later models is behind the grill on the left hand front wing.

The FL2 in the picture should actually be OK if that's as far in as it got. The air intake is nowhere near the water, nor are any of the sensitive electrics, given the angle of the car. The only thing which might suffer a bit is the starter motor - they've been known to die after a dunking. Pull it out and it was probably fine!

All my previous off-roading in lots of landrovers has always been with a manual box, those that offroad with an auto do you use command shift in 1st and 2nd or leave it in auto.

Can confirm that starter motor is a weak point as 3 months after the "Bala Of Road Day" (You can look it up on here if you wish) my starter motor seized up and the bill came to £300+ for a new one plus install. IMHO any "off road" vehicle should have a waterproof starter motor and alternator. Bill Life Honorary Member of Wallasey Motor Club. Licenced MSA Radio Operator for 35+ years.
