Be very cautious around water, you're better off not being first into the water then you can gauge depth, current flow etc on other vehicles. As with other obstacles get out and look and use something to gauge the depth or this might happen to you ...

not good when you remember the air intake is directly behind the left hand headlamp ... this motor was towed backwards out of what very nearly turned out to be a watery grave. The engine did ingest water and was lucky to survive ... so around water be it a puddle or flowing make sure you know how deep it is ... this motor had 200 miles on the clock!

The off road practice when approaching water that you are unsure of is to have someone (like the wife) to walk into the puddle. Once it is waist high you can tell her to climb in the back and you can forget that puddle for the moment ( although I'm sure she will NEVER let you forget it!!) Series 2a 88 - 1962

Both Freelander and Defender have the same wading depth of 500m in static water. The air intake on later models is behind the grill on the left hand front wing.

Best advice I can give is try and get on a LR Experience Course where you'll be shown the correct techniques for dealing with a variety of off road situations.

The FL2 in the picture should actually be OK if that's as far in as it got. The air intake is nowhere near the water, nor are any of the sensitive electrics, given the angle of the car. The only thing which might suffer a bit is the starter motor - they've been known to die after a dunking. Pull it out and it was probably fine!

Driver should still have checked first, of course.

Auto box offroad

All my previous off-roading in lots of landrovers has always been with a manual box, those that offroad with an auto do you use command shift in 1st and 2nd or leave it in auto.

Can confirm that starter motor is a weak point as 3 months after the "Bala Of Road Day" (You can look it up on here if you wish) my starter motor seized up and the bill came to £300+ for a new one plus install.

IMHO any "off road" vehicle should have a waterproof starter motor and alternator.
