What's in a name?

The motoring press and subsequently Land Rover themselves confirmed that the long-awaited Freelander 2 replacement in 2015 will be under LR's new sub-brand naming convention; specifically the "Discovery Sport". Hopefully the new vehicle will be an impressive leap forward in terms of technology, fuel economy, performance and low emissions, despite the new Disco name tag. Life is not a dress rehearsal!

I read somewhere the other day that the Discovery Sport will be launched with the same engine as the FL2 (2.2 Diesel), the new engine will not be available until roughly a year later.

That's right the disco sport will have the same engine and gearbox as Fl2 for at least a year, all new engines and gearboxes are going to jaguar

What's this modern fixation with changing names all about? Hasn't enough of our life been dumbed down already? I drive a Land Rover. I wanted a Land Rover, I bought a Land Rover and I'm glad I've got a Land Rover. Guess what it says on the bonnet?

Rant over.

I wish they had changed the name when the FL2 was launched...I can't even bring myself to write the full "F" word. Very Happy

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Orkney Grey

If it's got a Land Rover badge on it anywhere I guess it deserves to be loved whatever they call it. We've had the Land Rover series, the Defender until it dies, the Disco (now Disco family) the Range Rover family and the Freelander. With the retiring of the Freelander name, the model will take its place in history. Td4 XS manual, Orkney Grey, MY2014

Old engine

I had also read about the alleged Ingenium engine "rationing" as far as LR models are concerned. It's not clear whether it only applies to the diesel version of the engine or all of them.

I asked the sales guy at my local dealer yesterday, and queried whether anyone would buy a shiny new & probably quite expensive Discovery Sport, with an "old" generation FL2 engine. He felt many would, and evidenced the apparent appeal of the 2wd Freelander2 to some customers (though NOT me). Rolling Eyes

I still find it hard to imagine that LR would risk the fanfare and launch of a brand new model in a new generation of Land Rovers with such a negative ploy in the first few months. Plus what on earth would be the residual value of these lowbrid Discovery Sport models?! Shocked Life is not a dress rehearsal!

IF and I repeat IF I could afford a new 14/15MY Discovery the first thing I would get the dealership to do would be to remove the DISCOVERY bonnet lettering and replace them with the traditional LAND ROVER ones.
Some things should never change. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

It's true that light travels faster than sound, some people look quite intelligent until you hear them speak.

Stop global winging.

If the Freelander 2 name disappears then freel2.com will sort of starve to death without new Freelander 2 owners coming on board and the old cars dropping off the perch...
