number plate change

In a bit of a quandary at the moment with my car.

Retention certificate has come to put the old number plates back on as my own personal ones are now on retention ready to go on my new car. However I can't put back the old plates which the car should display because a new tax disc showing the original plates has not arrived though the post yet nor can we inform the insurance company about the plate change for the same reason. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

don't think it matters that you can't display the tax disc as long as it is on the system, as the dvla are usually behind with the paper side of things.

the police and the insurance companies take this into consideration.

On this subject I have a chance to buy a number on a retention certificate. Can it be sold on a certificate? Can the name (holder) be changed? No doubt there are yet more questions I have not thought of! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Yes - you can.

The way I have done it in the past is to declare the purchaser as the "nominee" on the certificate. That then bestows the right to assign the plate to a car of the nominees choosing (usually their own), rather than the person originally named on the certificate.

Seller can do this quite easily by filling in your details on the certificate in pen and then sending it to you. Once received you (as the nominee) then assign it to your car in the normal way (as if the certificate was originally in your name).

I have usually filled in the certificate with the nominees details, sent a photo to the purchaser of the completed certificate, at which point he/she pays. I then post the certificate.

Also, bear in mind you are merely purchasing the right to display the mark on your vehicle. The actual registration number remains the property of the DVLA for them to (in theory) reclaim/recall as they wish. A subtle, but important distinction.

As above, you can fit the original plates back on while you are waiting for the new tax disc.

The DVLA will have the car as the original plate now. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Usually when putting plates on retention the DVLA hand back the number plate that was on the car before. They don't issue completely new number plates. Like my B3 dog I had put on my car when I got it, now that number is on retention waiting to go on another vehicle the DVLA have handed back the original plate before I put mine on which is BF10 AEC which was originally on the car when I purchased it. So if you do decide to have personalised number plates it pays to hold onto the physical removed plates so they can be put back on the car without having to have ones made up again.
The DVLA issue a new log book with the original number on but it takes a few days for the dept dealing with tax discs to finish their tea break before they issue it Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Be careful I got stopped for speeding a few days after I received the evaluate confirmation that my private plate had been transferred but the tax disc hadn't come through in the post and still stated the original reg number
I got done with 3 points for speeding and was questioned about the tax disc which was checked by the copper. I told him I was awaiting it ion the post and was told that the tax disc must be a valid tax disc showing the vehicle reg, and that this should affect my insurance validity?
I wasn't done for the mis match tax disc but did get the speeding fine!
From that point on I have waited until both plate confirmation AND tax disc arrive in the post before swapping over

I'm still unsure of the exact rules but for the sake of a few days us it worth taking it up the ass.???

I have to say, whenever I have swapped plates, the authorisation to fit the new plates comes WITH the new tax disc - i.e In the same envelope.

e.g. In one envelope, I usually get a letter saying its done, a certificate allowing me to have plates manufactured, a new MOT, and a tax disc; all bearing the new registration number.

The only thing that follows later is the V5C.

I've never had to wait for the tax disc by separate delivery.

Yes that's generally my experience nowadays choccymonster now that the Ebla offices have closed and it's all online/post. My experience was pre dvla local office closing

I would still be careful if the situation arose of displaying a plate showing different details to the tax disc
Only my opinion

Agreed. If you got stopped and the police decided to take it further, then I suspect you would be fine as it would all check out.

However, by displaying a tax disc with a mismatched registration number you're just giving the officer concerned a wonderful excuse to hold you up further whilst he/she digs into it, and the rest of your vehicle.

If I were unfortunate enough to be in this position, I would just wait too until I had both he plate change and the tax disc in my possession.

Still - am interested to know why/how this could occur? Now everything is centralised, and as per my experience, I would not expect anyone to find themselves in this situation - everything SHOULD arrive in one envelope.....

Agreed I think the new process, which I'm currently waiting for my transfer papers after buying the FL2 on Thursday should come all in one bundle including tax disc etc within the next 7 days or so. I anticipate about 3 weeks for the v5 I ain't putting my plate on til they come through as tempting as it may be, even if it means the neighbours knowing I bought an 07 plate instead of a nearly new car!

Think I will wait until I get the tax disc and inform my insurance company before i put back the original plates. It may mean using my wifes car for a few days but that is better than a run in with the law.
What should happen and what does happen regarding getting everything in one post doesn't happenor I have never experienced it with the DVLA.
Maybe doing away with tax discs in instances like this is a good thing which is going to happen later in the year Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Upon receipt of the dvla reply you should get the confirmation to change plates, your reprinted tax disc and mot certificate reprinted. The v5 comes a little time later from Swansea

New tax disc system will make things interesting especially when you trade your car in to a dealer with a private reg on it. Teething problems afoot me thinks!
