Buying decision

Hi everyone,
I am going to be buying a TD4 and have seen an 09 with 135K on the clock. Good price, full service history although not all main dealer.
Anything I should be looking out for?
Whilst I know im on freelander loving site are there really as many problems with the 2.2 as everyone keeps telling me or is it just a case of perception from non freelander owners.
Bit of a sticking point at the moment. Im getting the impression freel2's are a bit like marmite.
I had an 04 freelander and said id never go back to one but test drove the 2.2 a few days ago and loved it for various reasons.
Thanks

United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

Its a completely different car to the Freelander 1. I went from a perfectly good 08 Jag XF to an 59 plate HSE with 38k on the clock its now has 46k and I have had it 14months and I have to say its one of the nicest cars I have had. I had loads of people telling me I was nuts I was buying trouble there crap etc but I still feel every one still thinks of the freelader 1.

2 lads in work still have Freelander 1's and wont sell them so that says something.

I love my Freelander and would happily either buy a face lifted one or hang on to it and get a new sport when then have been out 12 months or so or have a face lift, I learnt along time ago never to buy a first generation of any car and to let the faults and niggles get worked out first.

Looking at the competition and reading there forums they are equally as if not more troublesome.

I LOVE MY FREELANDER Very Happy HSE TD4 Stornoway Grey ★ Rear Spoiler ★ Black Leather Interior ★ Panoramic Roof ★ Navigation with Bluetooth ★ 19 " Alloys ★ Alpine Stereo 10 Disc Auto changer and Ipod connection and lots of other nice toys ★

Check the reliability stats:
http://www.reliabilityindex.com/

A complex 4x4 is never going to be as reliable as a simple supermini, but the FL2 is more reliable than the majority of the competition - a lot more reliable than most. The FL2 has its problems, but overall it's an excellent car and I wouldn't swap mine for anything but another one. People who knock the FL2 have usually never been in one!

Later diesel-engined FL1s aren't that bad either!

All I can say is.....I have driven Vauxhalls from Cavalier Mk2 days in the 80's, right up to Insignia's. I never thought that I would leave that brand to be perfectly honest, but having gone into a Dealer to get a brochure in late 2012 and coming out having bought one there and then, there is no WAY that I could ever go back to a normal car. I was so pleased with it, I bought another one. Neither have had any faults to report whatsoever. Ignore the critics - they (usually) work on hearsay based on the bad old LR days, rather than getting in one and seeing what it is properly capable of. Foraging near Gaydon....

Freelander differences this was written within a few months of swapping to the present 2008 FL2.
2006 TD4 auto HSE verses 2008 FL2 TD4 auto HSE G4

Engine
Biggest noticable change when driving.
Now has the power the car always deserved.
The older car was chipped, and still the newer car shows how it should be.

Steering
New car steering is the second biggest change.
A big dissappointment, there is so little feedback that I clipped the kerb many times during the first couple of months.
Off road there is an indicator to tell you which way the wheels are pointing, this is not a gimmick it's nessesary.
Both hussle well on winding country roads considering the size and weight.

Body
The width feels much greater, although the new car is only a few inches wider.
The older car was noticably wider than a defender which needed care off road, I look forward to tight country bridges later this year.
Loosing the rear mounted wheel asthetically was a backwad step, increasing the boot size practically a winner all round.
Lift up tailgate for me is a marginal plus point, for my much shorter wife is unusable - she cannot reach to close it.
The side opening door was problematic with window seals, but the rear opening window made for easy long loads.
Door extensions in theory keep the back of trousers clean when exiting, in practice they do not work, and worse, when off road they are very vulnerable, but look on the bright side they are less than 」30 to replace, which you will have to do often.

Sun roof
We are split over this one. Gill loves the double sun roof, and thinks the pop up fly screen is an idea that all cars should have.
I hate the roll up sun screen, made nessesary by the second panel. Previous car had one and it failed eventually. I woul prefer to loose the second roof and have a solid sliding cover as previously

Gadgets
Sat Nav - the new screen is a big improvement, it can also be viewed with polaroid sunglasses, which the old one couldn't. It presently has a mind of it's own when it comes to auto dim, but this should be fixed in the next firmware update. (Never was) The old system was basic but accurate - for both new discs are very expensive.
Mirrors - the new ones auot dip on reverse, love it.
Rear view mirror, auto darken on the new one - have resorted to blocking the sensor to get a useable view at night.
Auto lights - sometimes great, sometimes not, but at least you have the option to select it.
Motorised seats - with three memory positions, good idea, let down by the lack of height adjustment on the passenger side - will be fitting spacers in the near future.
Trip computer - at last, and its accurate,
Terrain response - not let me down yet.
Stereo - the old one was brilliant, the new is better.
Arm rest - had one fitted to the old car as an option, we both prefer the new ones.
Glove box - the old one was too small, drivers side was a joke, new one better, could still be larger.
Seats - the old one felt like a racing seat, it kept you in place when cornering, the new one less so - still miles better than anything else by Land Rover. Front seat pockets in new car seem to be a joke.
Ash Tray - the old one was difficult to empty but why omit one on the new one, bought a genuine accessory from the dealer, its very poor. (buy one from Ford it's cheaper) Those who don't smoke still have rubbish to dispose of.

Reliability
I was a regular visitor to the dealer with the older (less than 3 years old) car, haven't been back since I bought the new one.

Economy
Road tax has dropped from 」400 to 」215 enough said.
MPG both around 30mpg.
Servicing, new 15,000 miles - old 12,000 miles - roughly the same per service so a change for the better.
Shame about the tyres - the old car had Michelins, 45,000 miles per set and legendary grip on and off road. The new car has Dunlop, not bad rubber, just not as good, and the way they squeel when pushed I don't think they will last nearly as long - they lasted 35k

To be honest when I first got the FL2 I wasn't sure I had made the right choice, 5 years later I realise it was. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Thank you very much for the info everyone.
Certainly made me feel easier about not listening to people who think they know about everything.
Anything particular I should look for on an 09 xs with 135,000 on clock, not particularly worried about high mileage or should I be?

Timing belt change at 150K is going to be expensive.
If it's an auto I would suggest changing the gearbox oil at the same time - I don't think there is a recommended oil change interval, but if it hasn't been done then it should be at this point.

Diff oil change wouldn't be a bad thing either at this point.

But if it has lasted this long why not another 100K?

Mines only done 120k. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

135K on an 09 is excessive mileage. ( my 09 has 27K )

first thing you need to ask is why ??

and how many owners/drivers ?

tbh I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole !!

Why is it excessive? My 62 Plate MY2012 had 7 miles on it when I drove it away in November 2012, and by August last year , at just over 9 months old, had amassed 33,000 without missing a beat. If anything, it proved that they were designed to be driven! Which is precisely why I went straight out and bought another one. (Albeit a MY2013) Foraging near Gaydon....

27K a year is a very high mileage ( when sustained over 5 years ) and for that reason alone I would walk away.

there's plenty more 5 year old cars with an average mileage up for grabs.

It may be a high mileage but presumably the price reflects it.Personally i would rather buy a high mileage well maintained example. Mine has done 192k on an 08 plate and had already had the very expensive 150k service done. It drives lovely and looks as well if not better than a lot of other i have seen and cost less than a low mileage freelander 1.

Yes I do know its history. It is a one owner car with full land rover history having had a fortune spent on servicing. As i said i drives superb and looks like it has done about 30k including the interior. Just went through the test with 1 advisory,a tyre which is now done.

The days of high mileage cars causing problems long-term are long gone.....if it has the correct Service history, there is no reason why a modern Diesel engine can't do 300k+ without a major component needing to be replaced.

The UK is the only Country that I know of that worries about engines that have done X miles over 30k....when I lived in South Africa, 10/20 year old Toyota's still changed hands for serious money with 200/300k+ Km......engines are designed to be driven....just drive 'em! Foraging near Gaydon....

I don't have a problem with high mileage, when I was working I handed my company cars back after 3 years and 140 k miles and never had a problem with any of them, never replaced a single major component just normal servicing.
Trawling the motorway all day puts less stress on the vehicle than doing 30k miles in normal city driving.
My current FL has 90k on and appears to be going like a train. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

It's true that light travels faster than sound, some people look quite intelligent until you hear them speak.

Stop global winging.
