I would lean towards it being the Slave Cylinder. |

I'm thinking slave but as it is the bell housing from what I've read it's still a costly job and recommended to do the clutch at the same time. This is looking expensive. Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi 05 Liquid Blue

Have you checked the fluid level in the master cylinder? |

But have you checked it since you had the problem? |

Providing you haven't lost fluid, if the pedal is on the floor and the clutch is disengaged (ie you can change gears with the engine running but no drive) it will be the slave cylinder - possibly sticking. If on the other hand the pedal is on the floor and the clutch is engaged, it will be the master cylinder.

Checked the fluid after it went and it is up to level. The pedal is to the the floor but I can't select a gear with the engine running. There are no strange noises I had towed the caravan 90 miles prior to it going and no mishaps. Reversed it into the storage space switched off and when I went back found the pedal down. Can I assume it's the Master cylinder then? If so is that less hassle £££ than the gearbox off and slave replaced? Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi 05 Liquid Blue

Well, the only way you can lose hydraulic pressure without the loss of fluid would be if fluid was bypassing the master cylinder seals. That way the fluid remains in the system. If it was the slave cylinder seals that were being bypassed, you would lose fluid. I've had the same symptoms as you describe on several vehicles over the years with both clutch and brakes and it has always been the master cylinder. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Thanks Steve D I've just checked the pedal again by hand as I push down and lift up there is no resistance at all as though it is disconnected. I would have thought if it is the master cylinder seals there may gave been some resistance. I'm no mechanic just guessing really. Anyway hoping I can get it in Tuesday I will update then. Hoping it is the master cylinder as I suspect this will be so much cheaper. Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi 05 Liquid Blue
