Tailgate leak again

Hi. Ok. How many times have you got to take your car back to the dealer for water leaking into the tailgate. The next will be the third. Last fix lasted 2 months. It's a new car for gods sake!

I'm on the same ... It's going back this week for their 3 rd go ... It's got to be linked to the high level light. I fixed it myself on my old 07 freelander with clear silicone, but the dealer can sort it as it's only 2 months since they sold me it. Hope you get yours sorted ... I'm going to go nuts if I get it back and it still leaks . It's a 40k car and can not survive at night of heavy rain without a wet luggage cover in the morning.

Hi

Yes it's frustrating . Mine is 8 months old with 8000 miles on it. 3rd time lucky at dealers? I'm getting fed up of it now. I can't even work out where I could seal it. If you take the trim off covering it on the inside of the tailgate I can't see how you can get to it. Assume it has to be 'pulled' off from outside of car and I'm not doing that myself on new car. By the way, I covered the brake light with a plastic bag last night during the heavy rain and inside was dry this morning!

Your spoilt, the Dealer half a mile from is carp, to get them to look at it would need to book it in at least two weeks before hand, then be without the vehicle for a day as to get a courtesy cay you need to book it in at least three weeks prior, another Dealer is 45 minutes away, so a simple job you sort yourself, no point in getting stressed out over it, just pop out the lamp unit, just smear a bit of silicon sealant on the gasket and replace it, ten minutes, all done and relax.

If you are talking about "THAT" Dealer on the A41, suggesting that they are crap is paying them a complement! There are no adjectives suitable to describe the (lack of) Customer Service emanating from there. How they are still allowed to fly the flag for LR is beyond me! Foraging near Gaydon....

Hello. Thanks all. Just popped mine out - very easy. I guess they leak because the foam seal gets saturated? Do you smear silicone sealant on the foam then? Just normal si sealant from a tube from b&q I guess?

Thanks

It's easy to fix, I know .. But why should I ...

That's how to do it yourself .. The foam gets wet or on my old one just perished ... Thin line of sealant before the dryied out foam , then the light .. Don't use too much or the light it's hard to clip back in.

Might I suggest an additional but of preventative works.
.
The bulb is often part ruined because of the rainwater. Start first by nuying a new replacement bulb, fit this and use the car for a day with the new bulb just to prove its ok. (If it were to fail it will do within that first few hours).
.
Next unclip the light a second time and t cut and polish the paintwork wher the light seats down.
.
Now clean the foam and silicone before clipping back.
.
Motorist shops sell silicone in small screw top tubes as universal gasket material, this will give you a ready source without having to buy a gun frame for a standard cartridge.
.
Hope this helps, kind regards from Fred.

I'll get round to it maybe- now I know the reason and how easy it should be to fix? I know the dealer should do it, but they'll just put another one on maybe, rather than dealing with the flawed design. Ill have a think about it.. Now I've taken it off I can see why the drops of water end up not directly under the light - it will run down the inside of the plastic trim and drip when it gets to the join I suppose.

Cheers

Ad. Forgot to mention my dealer is 5 mins walk from work and was a factor in why I chose this car over a Sportage

Cheers

Although I'm sure the sealant works, when mine leaked I looked at it differently. For the foam to make a good seal it needs to fit tightly, so I tightened the fit. It is held in place by two catches which latch onto the inside of the bodywork, I just put some duck tape where it latches so it is a tighter fit. Had the car for some time after the mod and regularly jet washed her but it never leaked again.

amazing that the dealer grease-monkeys can't do a basic repair, but can change oil and filters no problem ??
