Buying A Used FL2

Hi everyone. New to the forum and to Land Rover in general.

I'm looking to buy a used Freelander 2, preferably 2011 onwards for the facelift and general improvements. I will be trading in my Kia Sportage (less than a year old but I hate it).

As I have never owned one before, I'm not sure what I should be looking for in terms of what services have been done for the age of the car and if there's anything I should check in terms of common faults.

I am currently looking at a 2010 (60 reg so facelift model) TD4 GS with 31000 miles, 3 owners, for £15500. For a car of this age and mileage, what services should it have had done?

Also, I seem to get conflicting info, but which spec is better in terms of kit - the GS or XS?

Thanks in advance.

Out of interest, what didn't you like about the Sportage. Test drive seemed ok, but not as good as fl2

Xs better spec. Highly recommend auto over manual.

Based on personal experience and lurking on these forums for a few years.
Things to look out for,

Slipping clutch (if manual obviously). Just load it up in 5th or 6th.
Ensure smooth gearchange between first and second (manual).
Ensure clutch engages smoothly and progressively between gearchanges (manual). If it doesn't feel right don't just assume you will get used to it.
Diff whine
Wheel bearing whine
Auto - usual checks. Smooth gear changes, changing up and down as expected
Wing mirrors fold in and out smoothly when locking/unlocking doors
Check for excessive rattles and squeaks

With that mileage/year I think it is just 2 services - 15k and 30k. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc
(Going) 2013 TD4 GS Auto - Santorini Black with black leather. Cold Climate, UK Lighting & Armrest Packs. Privacy Glass. LR Rubber Mats. Full size spare.
60 000 miles averaging 35mpg

(Gone) 2010 TD4 Manual GS - Stornoway Grey. Sold at 3yrs old & 64k miles. Final average consumption 39.2mpg.

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Santorini Black

Earlier this year I bought a 60 plate 57k 2010 Freelander - that was quickly exchanged for the one I still have - a 10 plate, 31k. They were both non-facelift, manual GS.

A 2010 should have had 4 services by now. A services are oil, oil filter and aircon filter changes. B services are the same but with air and fuel filter changes. So, your 60 plate (assuming it's reached it's 4th birthday) should have had 4 annual services by now - A, B, A (with brake fluid change) and then B. This is to the LR schedule and irrespective of mileage.

Check that the above has been done - look at the paperwork and don't be fobbed off.

As others have said, the XS is higher spec. I found the GS to be the best 'value' spec but I do miss the leather seats of my old Disco..

If that price of £15500 is for a 31k XS from a Land a Rover dealer with LR warranty then I'd jump at it - based on my research in January I'd say it's a good price.

Choose your dealer (even a 'proper' LR one) carefully - I didn't and had big problems, subject of other posts. The FL2 is a great car and I'm sure most of their dealers are fine too. LR themselves can be full of it and seem to think they are Apple, desperately trying to reposition the brand ever upwards.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful. As ive never experienced it, what would a slipping clutch feel like?

to answer the Sportage question, i have the petrol 1.6 engine which is so under powered it is depressing. The steering is actually quite scary at high speeds (so light and jittery) and I have had some faults with it which suggest its not a great car.

i would prefer as new a FL2as possible, simply to lower the chances of general wear and tear issues just after I get it, although of course you can never tell.

Slipping clutch - try coming off a bend in a high gear and flooring it. If the clutch is slipping the revs will increase whilst the traction decreases or stays the same.

this is what I was expecting - services are either every year or x miles whichever comes first.

Oh. The Sportage I tested was highest spec 2 ltr diesel, so they might be completely different

Oops.. I missed the service every year if 15k not reached. I do min. 20k a year so this has never happened to me Very Happy

3 owners does seem a little excessive? I would expect most cars with this age/mileage to have had 1 or possibly two owners. More may suggest this is a problem car that people want to get shot of. Hard to tell really. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc

Yeah, I had thought about that myself. But thought it was a good example of the kind of age of car Id be looking at.

seems annoying that the trade ij value for my less than year old car is still less that that FL2 I mentioned. I may need to go the private sale route.
