Nest - good or a waste of time?

Been looking at Nest, the thermostat that supposed to learn and save money

Ignoring the fact you can pointlessly turn your heating on when your out, to keep the fish happy I suppose Rolling Eyes

My thermostat, I can program, so it's on when I'm in, off when I'm out and only comes on when the temp is lower than what's set, basically, it's set to 18c all day every day and I blip it if we need too

So how's nest going to save me money? Do you have to continually press it or something, or does it have movement sensors that recognise that your in? How does it know I'm in if I'm not gone up stairs were the thermostat is?

What do the manufactures of "nest" claim in the way of money saving and then compare the cost of the product with what you will save cash wise. John Lewis £176 or there a bouts plus the cost of a gas save qualified electrician to install it as well as taking time off work ( for those who have to work that is) Retirement is fun

If i want heating altered I just call for "er Indoors" to turn it up or down. OK you think I am sexist, but in actual fact it keeps her well exercised and fit. Arn't I a kind hearted person Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Not read enough about the savings yet, more interested in how it's done to see if its worth while

Just had a look, very difficult to ascertain savings as they use a savings based what your controls are at present. I suspect that should you have thermostatic valve on your radiators and a timed thermostat then between £150-£300, really can't see the higher £600 (based on a 4 bed 8 rad house detached) should the house be occupied most of the day. The outlay is just over a grand, plus fitting, I can't see the need for a gas safe if you are a fairly competent DIY er, there is no gas work involved, The system appears to be plug in and as such needs no qualified or certified electrical work, I suspect that if you are capable of setting to work a home wireless/LAN hub it won't be difficult, Should you have a present room thermostat it will only be a two wires to change over when you switch off the boiler. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

i have TRV on all but 2 radiators, onces required to not have one and the others is a towel rail

theres not much else i could do, I don't have the thermostat bouncing temps up and down, just have it set on a minimum 18c 24/7 and if we need more heat blip it up a couple of degrees

which looking on the Nest videos, you need to keep rotating the dial to turn it on to a warmer setting

still puzzled Confused

Looks good if only to be able to turn the heating down remotely when you know that no-one's going to be in the house for a while

You can buy TRV.s with built in timers so you can time each and every radiator to open and close at set time's but they are not that nice to look at.

I've spent ages correctly balancing my rad thermostats/towel rails.
Got it right now and it's made a noticeable difference to fuel used without the house feeling any colder Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
