I was told the TD4 is exactly the same as the SD4 excepting the engine mapping. is that true ?

Driven both quite a lot in auto over the last few years. I have a SD4 auto [4k miles] and for the last 10 days I have been in a TD4 auto [brand new dealer loan car, 100 miles only], after 2 days back in my SD4 I can advise the SD4 is smoother, less fussy to drive, required less throttle input and picks up speed much quicker than the TD4 especially over 40mph. Overall the SD4 is a much more relaxed drive.

Even my wife commented from a passenger perspective the SD4 was smoother and more relaxing.

Point proven in my opinion Thumbs Up

My view, clutch and DMF, the Freelander is heavier.

Both TD4 and SD4 give 420Nm of torque at 1750rpm.

TD4 manual is cheaper to buy new than a TD4 auto which is cheaper to buy than an SD4 auto.

True about the costings ect, but the SD4 is still the stronger performer.

TD4's are old technology by comparison to new SD4's. Every SD4 I have driven is smoother, quieter and more efficient than any TD4 I have driven.

The latest TD4 and SD4 are identical except for software. ED4 runs smaller injectors.

Weight won't have much bearing as it is torque that can destroy a clutch, and the TD4 and SD4 are pretty much the same on torque levels. , it is more a marketing ploy. LR wanted to keep the top of the range diesel as an auto.

But the fact is, SD4 is a way better machine in all areas, except maybe mpg. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
