mobile phone advice please ...

I don't mind admitting I'm a bit of a mobile phone numpty !

I use them to make and receive calls and texts ..... nowt else, I've only just upgraded from a Nokia 3310! (to a nokia 6300) and that’s my works phone. Blue tooth, in car and all that I don’t get involved.

Anyway we have three other mobiles in our house, and after having a problem with one of them recently (and realising how reliant we have become on them!) it occurred to me that keeping a spare phone might not be a bad idea.

So I’m wondering how to get a phone that we can keep as a spare but would work on different networks, I guess this is where ‘unlocking’ comes in?

Can I buy a really cheap phone, say from Tesco’s that would come with their pay as you go sim card, then get that phone unlocked so that we could put any of the other sim cards in that phone and it would work?

If this possible, what do I need to know about unlocking and is it easier on some phones than others?

Any advise much appreciated.

Do a search on google with the phone model and see what that throws up. I unlocked one of mine a few years ago now so can't remember what the web site was or even the phone but I know it is posible and easy to do.

Sorry can't be more help Embarassed ______________________

9 out of 10 phones can be unlocked,

I find it alot easier to pop down the market and have the mobile phone shop unlock the phone that i want sorting for £5 or £10 dependant on model.

Instead of buying, just keep hold of the old phone after your free upgrade if your on a contract, that what i do, but i have a little stock pile of old phones Embarassed Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Thanks, starting to get some ideas now.

First it sounds as though I'm correct that once unlocked a phone will work with any active sim card.

The networks we want to cover, at present are Three and Vodafone

I still have the 3310, bit of a brick but it works, but at its age can it be unlocked?

Correct once unlocked it will work on any network, just as would buying a handest without a contract....but a lot cheaper!

It's even easier on the old phones and less likely of anything going wrong in the process, because they ae simple.

The other part to this is make sure to back your contacts up on PC so should something happen with your phone you will always have everything available.
