no they dont they just source a clutch at cost effective prices and hope they are strong enough, over use a clutch at your peril,


do not make out that working a clutch harder does not shorten its life, its a spring loaded friction plate subject to slip and heat damage, never mind the ever present unreliability of dual mass flywheels.

I know about engineering CG, I have a degree in mechanical engineering.

but the abuse starts when people :-

tow too big a trailer /caravan etc
overload said trailer /caravan etc
or are not particularly good at reversing

Ive seen all kinds of loads driven well with full sympathy and also tiny loads wrecking clutches by poor drivers.
especially in the days when farm vehicles had dry clutches. but either way the clutch with the most load wears out first, the driver being the same

no thankfully everything except my ford ranger has either wet clutch packs or is hydrostatically driven At work

Well I have just traded my MY2010 manual and after 8 years of use including a few thousand miles towing 1.4 tonnes of caravan was still on it's original clutch and working well.

I accept that an auto box is easier, no twirling the metal stick etc to get going but the clutch issue is a bit of a red herring... come to think of it, it does smell a bit like herring after reversing into a caravan pitch   MY2014 SD4 XS

And the reason the SD4 only came as auto was because the clutch was well up for the extra power!

My SD4 auto is very nice to drive but the thing I have noticed (and my wife mentioned it too) is the small amount of throttle movement generally required in most situations. It's almost like you have a pressure switch under your foot rather than a pedal and a slight variation in pressure is all you need to control the car. Has anyone else noticed this? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I agree, once moving, the SD4 seems accelerate effortlessly. A combination of smooth downshifts and bags of available torque make for very easy increases in speed.
I tend to use cruise control a lot to avoid exceeding the speed limit by too much, both in and out, of limited areas.
I have my speed limit tone set at 78mph indicated ( 75mph GPS ) just to remind me, when say overtaking, as ( for an aerodynamic brick ) the SD4 gathers speed surprisingly quickly. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
