CHANGE 2 OR ALL 4???

...

Doing a routine tyre tread check, I find that my tyres are as follows:

FRONT OFFSIDE: Quite well worn, approx 3mm tread
REAR OFFSIDE: Very worn, just above legal
FRONT NEARSIDE & REAR NEARSIDE: In goodish shape, approx 4mm on each

Question is, what to do? My view is that the minimum action is change both OFFSIDE tyres. Or, given winter approaching, do I change all 4 ...? Confused

Advice please on what you would do, and any consequences of just changing the 2 offsides? Ta !!

Not sure about the Freelander 2 but for the Freelander 1 LR recommend to change all 4 or change in axel sets if if need be. New tyres MUST always go onto the rear. If you place new tyres on the front the VCU thinks the car is slipping and you will shatter the IRD Shocked Not sure how it works for the haldex unit though Whistle

End of the day tyres car save your life! If your keeping the car for at least another year or so then I'd repalce all 4 Thumbs Up Saves you Censored about at a later date and wasting your time at a garage to replace just one tyre MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

If you only change two put the two new ones on one axle (opinions differ - I'd probably put then on the back, but others will say front) and the two older tyres on the other axle.

As for changing 2 or 4, for me it would depend on the conditions you're likely to be driving in. If you anticipate having to drive in snow I'd play safe and change all 4. If you don't anticipate having to drive in such conditions you should be OK just changing 2 for now.

Note that the FL2 is not the same as the FL1 when it comes to tyres - different tyres front and rear will do no harm to the Haldex or any other 4wd component.

Thanks for advice thus far... I anticipate driving through the upcoming winter, including on country lanes, mild offroad (uneven rocky possibly icy/slippery uphill (& therefore, downhill as well... Rolling Eyes ) farm tracks, along with normal A-road & motorway driving. So a mixed bag.

I'm thinking go for all 4 as an opportunity to try a different set (Nokian WR G2 eg...).

Anybody have experience of Nokian WR G2 in winter AND year round? Or any other suggestions that will meet the need for mostly on-road but some offroad driving year round? Thanks again all... Very Happy

If you drive in the Alpine Regions of Europe you need a minimum of 4mm tread depth if on All Season tyres such as Continental 4x4 Contacts or Goodyear Wrangler HP AW.
Last winter my Continentals were down to under 3mm all round and were useless in the snow, I then put 4 new ones on and they were fine in the snow. Personally I'd be looking at changing all 4 at this time of year if they are down to or below 4mm although they're still legal and will still be fine in the dry.

Bit the bullet & ordered a set of KL78s from local independent. He's doing them for £90+VAT per corner all in (supply/fit/bal/valve etc) which I think is OK.

My head is spinning from 'Tyre Research' ... Shocked so I'm happy I've made a decision. Given my driving patterns, I think the KL78s should be good.

Will keep posting on how I find them compared to the stock GY HP AW tyres.

Thanks to all for patience & advice!

Sorry for reviving an old thread, I've asked for the two front tyres to be replaced while my car is in for its 3rd service tomorrow, and wanted to know whether I should ask for the new ones to be put on the back instead.

Lots of advice around the internet around doing this for 2wd cars as losing traction at the back and oversteering/spinning is more dangerous than understeer with loss of grip on the front.

They do say to have the worse tyres on the front. That way the driver will feel through the steering when they are getting bad. If fitted to the rear, it could suddenly break away without warning on bends or roundabouts. That's the theory but I prefer my best tyres on the front! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

My FL2 was a fleet car and when it comes to tyre renewal you know what they are like, not until 2mm left can we put the unworn on back on the front etc etc, but no with the Freelander they said we have to change all 4 to keep them the same diameter as it mucks up the diffs, so knowing what they are like about cost saving etc, if they recommend something its got to be done then thats how it must have to be.

Put 4 new Scorpions on today, ones that came off all had between 3 and 4mm left. I don't usually wait for the depth markers to come level. 11 SD4 HSE Stornoway Grey / Black Windsor Leather
