12N /12S V's 13 pin electrics

Got a bit of time to think which type of electrics I want as towbars are a dealer fit option only and not available as a factory fit like on the D4. What are the advantages of having the newer style 13pin eu approved electrics? I can only see three disadvantages;

1. Have to carry silly adaptor in car all the time.
2. When it's MOT time if the electrics don't work car will fail MOT.
3. You will have to wait that bit longer to have the 13pin electrics tested. MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

13 pin are far superior in quality and how they will last. The grey plug on the caravan and often the grey socket on the car suffer from centre pin burnout when the brass prongs of the centre pin get squeezed together. It's the earth return for fridge operation when driving and can carry 12 amps. It then melts the plastic surrounding the base of the pin and often the socket female "pin" too.
13 pins plugs lock into the socket far better and less likely to fall out. Pins are stainless steel not brass.
All caravans since 2009 are fitted with 13 pin plugs. Older caravans can be converted to single 13 core wiring - not difficult for a skilled caravan engineer - about £100. FL2 2007 57 GS

My car was ex LR and came with a factory fitted tow bar, as far as I am aware there are many LR "Company" cars with factory fitted bars and can be selected from accessories when ordering. Whether or not it applies to all tow bars,or only factory fitted, but there is an addendum to my handbook stating that the Tow bar may be loaded to 250KG providing the that the max rear axle is not exceeded and the extra 100Kg included in the vehicles gross mass. There is a second addendum stating that the caravan nose weight may be discounted providing the vehicle travels at less than 60mph/90kph. My electrics are 12N,12S and I have found they are the most positive fitting 12 type sockets I have ever had, don't know where LR get them. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Jonathan 26 is spot on re 13 pin sockets but just in case you have any trouble have a look at this from a caravaner's blog. Also lots of other great caravan mods and other questions answered.

Your No.2 Most MOT testers do not have the time/cannot be bothered to check the 12N/13 pin sockets during an MOT.

Only problem with the 13 pin electrics is that the pins sometimes need re-aligning. It is a well known issue but easily solved by getting a green 13pin socket cover/alignment tool off ebay for about £5. I got mine from Drayton Caravans. It can be left on to protect the pins from the weather when not in use and the pins will always be aligned.
Hope this helps.

This alignment of the 13 pin plug, I have heard stories of people having trouble with them within days of first using them, I've been using the 13 pin plug for over four years and never been a problem. Is it something that could happen with the cheaper plugs or any of them Question p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I just saw how many people on forums were seeing the problem so for the price thought it better to have one than not.

I have just bought the 13 pin genuine LR electrics for my new FL2. It has a tow bar and twin electrics, but I'll be swapping them.

On your towbar are the double electrics both on one side or one either side of the towbar? I know for the dynamic you require a separate bracket for the electrics and if I opt for double I would not like them to be both on the same side Whistle MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

I have used 13 pin for few years now, great connection, less of a voltage drop across the plug and much quicker and neater hooking up. Thumbs Up Jaguar x-type sport gone

My new MY13 came with 13 pin single socket as part of the deal, must admit to fiddling around for 5 minutes not realising I had to twist the plug Embarassed
Much sturdier than my old 7 pin when connected. Also the new MY13 car 12 volt socket in the boot is not permanent live anymore so I can't top up the car battery with my CTEK charger Mad so now charge it via the 13 pin trailer socket which has a direct connection to the battery.

Could I ask of anyone who has swapped their twin electrics for single 13pin on the detachable towbar, what did you do with the bracket for the electrics. I was looking at doing this and the bracket alone seems to cost £90. Is there another option, I wanted to wire it myself but might get a local garage to look at it as I guess the bolts may be difficult to move after 6 years.
