Problems with Electrics

Hi - Need some advice please. Freelander 2 (2007) HSE, manual. I am having various electrical issues, which may or may not be related. The main issue is the battery light on the dash is intermittently on (more on that off). I have checked the battery connections (super secure), taken the battery to be checked (fine but car needs a good run), have tested the voltage at rest (12.1V) and with the engine running (13.78V both with and without the light showing).

Additional issues I have is the two heated seats have stopped working (both fuses are fine) and the heated front screen (left hand side) comes on as soon as the car is started and without the button on. I have had problems with the front screen only 'half' coming on in the past but not from start all by itself.

Any ideas ? and does anyone think these issues might be rerlated?

Thanks Peter

After a cold start, I think the voltage should be showing more than 13.78v (more like 14.4v) and if the alternator light is showing I would begin to suspect a dodgy diode in the alternator. These are 180amp alternators which are not cheap so if the rest of the unit is fine a repair would be OK. I think a competent auto electrician needs to see it to give a definite diagnosis.

The "half" thing on the heated screen is not uncommon and I don't think it is related to your other issue. John

Thanks John. Someone else had mentioned the diode as a possible issue. I agree on the heated screen as in the past it was the right side working and not the left. I'm still concerned that it's coming on from start up without the heated screen button being pressed on though...

Sorry, I didn't read your post on the screen properly. If it comes on without the switch being on there is a problem. Take out the fuses for the screen and the heated seats and see if this makes any difference to the voltage. The screen drags a lot of power from the battery. I would check the relay for the heated screen as it looks like it has stuck on. John

Hi John. OK I have the following:

Static without the ignition on 11.86V with ignition on 11.71V. With engine running no fuses out 13.54V with engine running fuses out 13.54V (so no difference).

Now I have nothing to say that the LH heated screen is actually coming on other than that side of the screen is clearing on its own on a morning.

Halfords checked the battery and said it was in cood condition but just needed a long run to give it a good charge.

Thanks

Peter

Others have had problems with the battery earth connection where it attaches to the car body. This can become corroded and cause various electrical problems. An easy fix is to fit an additional earth cable between the battery and one of the bolts attaching the starter motor. A search should find several threads on the subject.

As John has said, the heated screen is very draining and if it is on continuously, the charging system (this puts the battery light on) may not be able to put sufficient charge into the battery to overcome the drain. You could remove the heated screen fuses, do a hard reset (battery terminals off and touch together) then leave the fuses out and see if the battery light comes on anymore (and if the heated seats work again). Then you can test the heated screen sides separately along with the relays.

Thanks Wizking. Could it still be this even though there is no difference in voltages with or without the heated screen (HS) fuses in? I would have thought there we definitely be a difference if the HS was causing this? I will try this anyway as it's a pretty simple action to take. Appreciate the feedback.

Is it definitely the heated screen sticking on one side or are the blowers heating on one side only?
Just a thought.

Also check the alternator warning light wire (on the alternator), there could be a loose or dodgy connection causing the light to come on.
Not sure but maybe the heated seats won't work due to the charge warning issues.
If the car thinks the alternator is shagged it probably won't allow the seats to work as they take alot of juice to run.
