managed to get a stone chip on the windscreen of the MX5 yesterday.

it's on the passenger side field of view area and is about 2mm, no cracking or anything and doesn't seem too deep.

have any of you guys had windscreen chips repaired ? and if so how successful was it ?

looking at this chip, it may be too small to do a repair, and they may try and make it bigger, if you know what I mean.

also is the finished repair invisible ?

your advice and comments appreciated

Ive had a chip repaired on the freeely and although you can still see the crack, it's been fine over 3 winters.

i have two, on mine one passenger and one drivers

bother repaired by national windscreens, they don't use the vacuum pump method, just a cheap basic clear filler, the passenger one is good, but the drivers is more visible over time, but still passed its MOT

i rang autoglass to see how much it would cost to have them do it, but the price was something like £100 but in the past i have found their vacuum system, sucks all the air out of the chip and any crack and then pulls the glue into the crack and is less visible, but wasn't going to pay that sort of money

I suppose its visibility after repair depends on how quickly you got it done before dirt was allowed to get into the crack which would be hard to remove?

i have some little discs that are clear that i stuck on, got given them the first time round

I've had several stone chips repaired over the years on various Landrovers including my Freelanders. I have used the Free repairers you see in supermarket car parks but latterly contacted my Insurance company who
arranged a free repair from a mobile unit. In each case the repair was virtually invisible.

I'll give it some thought, if it wasn't in the passenger field of view I would probably just leave it ?

having it done will lesson it and its cheaper than a new window

also NW will deduct the cost of what you pay for the repair, from the excess you pay if the windscreen does end up cracking from the chip repair in the future

I have had three done they have all been fine,if you leave it it may end up cracking the glass.It will not cost anything if you are fully comp you can still see it but you soon take no notice of it.

Over here in the states, they'll repair chips, but as soon as the crack gets beyond about an inch, done-so; you need to replace it. Though the actual LAWS about replacing them for the yearly vehicle inspections vary from state to state. In Virginia, as long as it's a single crack and not spider-webbed or branched, then it will pass without any problem.
Mine got chipped a tiiiiiny bit in my semi-tire accident last week and I was going to get it repaired with the goop, but Tuesday morning our temperatures plummeted to 8-degrees F and of course the glass cracked on the drive to work with the heat going. Thankfully, insurance figured that into the damages from the tire.
