I think that you are getting science and religion (politics) mixed up. Even the Greek thinkers had an idea that the world must be spherical, but no one could figure out what size it might be. The scientists were right later, in the late middle ages, when they said that the earth revolved around the sun, against the populists (and church) view that everything revolved around the earth. Not to mention Darwin, and many many, more. You say I'd take a lot more notice if, even once, they said "We're not sure". Or even (shock, horror) "We don't know" It is because science says 'we are not sure' until the theory is reproducable, that I take interest in what they are saying.
