Rear Diff and possibly dodgy garage?

Hi,

Our Freelander 2 started making the "rear pinion bearing" drone, no problem we hsal take it back to the dealer and get it fixed, long story short now...

Initially the dealer said "not the diff its tyre noise" (this is a non LR dealer, but are a main dealer and large well established group)

Taken to LR franshised dealer, diagnosed properly as the diff.

Back to selling dealer, stiff talking to, they agree to fix, wont pay LR to do it but will use there own "specialist"

Now the good/bad bit... collected the car and the noise still there, on getting home checked what we can see of the work carried out and it appears they
have sprayed the rear diff a nice shade of wheel trim silver and thats about it, even have overspray on the CV's and rear cross member!

Cannot find the full procedure to change the pinion bearing but it must involve removing the complete diff assembly? if I am right on that how did they do it
without leaving a single fingerprint in the fine film of brake dust on the wheels, none of the lower control arm bolts have been touched?

the little crossmember towards the front of the diff has tool marks on the bolts, but they are the only ones, the propshaft bolts don't appear to have been touched

Or am I completely wrong and it is tyre noise and the garages specialist is some form of Ninja mechanic?

Thanks!!

You get bad garages with big names even in the same brand and good ones with small garages ....

It is worth getting your paper work together and talking to Trading Standards so you know your rights.

The_Doctor on here may even be able to help.

As for if there is a problem or not I'll leave that to others with a bit of know how.

Thanks,
Had a call back from the Service Manager, he is adamant they can change the pinion bearing without removing the diff unit? is it possible to do CORRECTLY, ie with the correct pre-load on the bearing etc??

Thanks!

When they did mine, at a proper Land Rover dealer, they took the diff out completely and worked on it on the bench, I saw them doing it, they said its no good just sticking a new bearing in you have to check theres no damage been done to the gear teeth as well or otherwise you might be doing it all again next week, and it was a pukka job afterwards too, ran like a brand new car.

You need to take it to the right folk with the correct tools to do the job, it costs more in the end using so called all car specialists that arent.

Mine was done last week. They initially prescribed a 'low level diff repair' but when they got it out, it needed a new diff.
I think the important bit here is that they needed to get it out to know for sure. This is from a main LR dealer in the Midlands who've been really good to date. My FL2 has done 174,000 miles. 138,000 miles & counting

Long time no reply but.... The diff pinion bearing was changed both inner and outer, they had removed the diff unit from the car but did it without removing any suspension components or wheels, interesting to see this done!

The noise was still there on driving it as I said, so we swapped the tyres front to back and the noise changed, so after biting a sizable bullet replaced all 4 with Pirrelli Scorpions, we now a silent running F2!

Supplying big independent (Franchise locally for about 5 other makes) still proved themselves to less than truthful as they claimed they did the job, but actually had farmed it out (probably best they did with hindsight) and a Sales Manager who admitted he knew little about cars "I only sell them"
