Parts prices look reasonable. Unusual to need cables though. Changing rear discs, pads and parking brake shoes are a relatively simple DIY job if you have some experience. I guess the cables (if needed) would not be too difficult. It seems to be a conventional system. NB. mine is at 102,000 miles still with original shoes and cables.

Thanks-I think I'll leave this to the garage to sort out. There was talk of things having ceased etc, so maybe not completely straight forward. Brakes not something you'd want to get wrong! But a sore one nonetheless in January financially. |

The handbrake shoe adjusters do sieze, this is unkind to the shoes.

I'm surprised the shoes need replacing unless you've had a sticking handbrake, or put the handbrake on before you have stopped, normally the adjusters seize and only cost a couple of quid. |

mine seized and caused my car to fail its MOT, new shoes adjusters and disc and pads needed

Cheers folks-yup, been having a problem with the handbrake sticking-I think this has been the route of the problem. However the discs were already quite 'done' looking to me and a wee bit surprised they got through the last couple of MOTs. |

Shoes on one side were badly grooved some debris had been acting as a grinding paste.

I tried not using my handbrake to help avoid the problem after having to get new discs, pads and shoes after they seized but it only made them seize more due to lack of use! |

Thanks for the heads up there-I'll maybe try a few handbrakers now and again...not sure donuts are possible in a 2.2 diesel! |

The way the handbrake shoes work inside the rear discs seems like a good idea, but the problem is that the inside surface of the discs (where the shoes rub) rusts very quickly if not used.

I know your in portree but if you get a chance try the boys at Strathearn Eng. They have serviced the wifes whilst mine under warranty was done at main dealer. The cost and the difference in service was night and day JB19 |
