EGR

Car conked out on my wife today. AA came and said it was the EGR stuck open.

Any advice gratefully received, particularly regarding whether its worth trying to clean it myself and how much it will cost to fix/replace.

EGR Valve Part numbers

May I kindly suggest that you check part numbers and compatibility. The ebay source is mainly new parts from the factory with small marks.
.
There are at least two types of EGR valve fitted, I believe that I am correct in saying that there was a change in late 2010 when the 2011MY came in. Later cars EGRs visibly are quite different indeed, whether they are compatible I don't know.
.
If its compatible then buy; Ive bought from him and his description, packing, delivery etc is very correct.
.
Hope this helps.
.

Yes
.
Whilst I havnt done the LR freelander I have done many Vauxhalls. Buy a big can of aerosol brake cleaner and if you have access to an air line then all the better.
.
If you do take it off and find it sticking and sludgy then you are possibly only seeing one part of the story. Your inlet manifold is likely to be suffering also and may have sticking butterfly vanes, there are 4 inlet ports with butterfly's and four without. Butterfly's were fitted 2007 - 2010 pre facelift cars; members on the forum have reported vanes breaking off and passing through to the valves with wreckage of the engine. It may be prudent to remove, clean and check as a double job.
.
Later 2011my cars lost the butterfly's from the build specifiction.
