Yes it does. The trick is to keep it as a "blob", try not to smear it around too much. MY10 TD4 SE Auto

That's a good installation Impact; I'm going to have to modify one of the brackets on mine because it covers the data input port. I'm sorry my assumption on the power lead was wrong, hope it didn't cause too much of a problem.
Cheers, Graham

Hi Graham, no problem at all. I was just being lazy. Finished product actually turned out heaps better than i expected. Originally I had it hardwired to the near or the two cigarette lighters. I didn't feel like getting my soldering iron out, so I just cut the wire and connected another cigarette lighter socket to it. To put it another way I now have two cigarette lighters between the seats (standard) and one more underneath the fascia next to the gear lever. This way, I reckon, it's a bit more future proof. Next time I just unplug the satnav and plug another one in.... MY10 TD4 SE Auto

Well I installed a 7'' Garmin 2797 the other day. It's WAY better than the 1490T I had previously and I just love the App that links up with the iPhone to the device.

Like impact, I had to nibble away at some plastics to make it fit, but the end result is awesome Very Happy

Thanks to egipp for sharing this "modification" Thumbs Up

You are very welcome AiiEX and congratulations on the installation; I totally agree that it is a big improvement over the 1490, just begs the question as to how Land Rover -and other manufacturers - justify the $2000 plus for OE fitments let alone the exorbitant charges for map updates.
Cheers, Graham

sat nav versus tablet

Hi there, please assist

I have a freelander 2 2012 SE model

Whats a better option between installing a 7" tablet or a 7"garmin.
I am interested in getting mainly gps but the tablet option looks premium(but seems too much work)
The other threads relating to tablets require soldaring etc and circuit diagrams.... Is this also required with a garmin?
Your help is highly appreciated.

Thanks.

G'Day Maru, Beyond getting the power from the front interior fuse box, the Garmin 7" requires no wiring or circuit alterations. I find it a very good unit for GPS work which is what I require and, as AiiEEX highlights, there are other features incorporated including Bluetooth. I've no experience of tablet installation so can't comment on those.
I think you would be very satisfied with the Garmin, which is designed to be a navigation unit, but it doesn't have inputs for camera or DVD playing.
Fitting is straightforward with some minor trimming of plastic on the back of the console panel; beyond that, it's almost tailor made for the Freelander and physically looks identical to the OE unit, but with free mapping for life.
If you do decide to go ahead I'd be happy to help out if you needed any assistance with it.
Cheers, Graham

Hi!
Very good idea to use a garmin GPS in the place of original and bad land rover's GPS. But how about the GPS sound? Is it possible to connect it to original car's audio system so that I can listen the voice instruction on car's audio like the original one?

I doubt there will be an easy way to feed the sound via the car audio system since there are no output jacks on the Garmin. However, the sound output from the unit is perfectly audible and clear and I'm sure you won't have any problem listening to it. It won't, of course, mute the car audio system when in use, but it generally can be heard even under those circumstances.

Sorry to reopen a old thread, but what happens if your phone is linked to your sat nav and car? Does it not confuse when reciving a call?

Cheers

Hi Daniel,

Yes - you can have both paired by disabling the handsfree on the sat nav. This allows you to take hand free call in the car and use the smart link service.

Go for the 2798 with the DAB traffic! Smile
