viscous coupling unit??

Hi all
I'm having some intermittent vibration on my 56 GS. Its kind of like driving on rumble strips on the side of the motorway only its on and off could come at any speed and for any amount of time.

First question is do I have a VCU (viscous coupling unit) or was that replaced on the 2nd generation Freelander with the Haldex or do I have both?? I'm told a VCU has a life of around 70,000 miles I have done 77,000.

Second question is I think I've thrown some wheel weights of my rear wheel which I will get sorted on Monday. Do you think this would create a intermittent vibration? I would think it would just vibrate all the time.

or if anyone has any other ideas or comments lease let me know

I'm going to crawl underneath tomorrow to see if the prop shafts are loose or i can see anything obvious probably wont help but might make me feel better.

Thanks in advance

No viscous coupling on a Freelander 2. 56 plate will be on Haldex Generation 3.

Wheel weights missing could give the symptoms you're experiencing, get them checked and replaced first before embarking on potentially expensive diagnostics

agree with RL above wheel weights would be my first suspicion. Loss of them won't cause vibration all the time but at certain speeds when the imbalance in a wheel creates a certain a certain resonance (or something like that!). When on the front wheels it can cause the steering wheel to vibrate quite alarmingly!

You might get lucky and find this is the only problem - hope so anyway.

Thanks for your answers i'm relieved to say the Holdex is fine.

Took my Freelander to my local ATS Euro-master today, so they could balance the wheel and i mentioned to them the vibration i have been feeling. They said that it could be a break problem so while they had the wheel off they had a quick look and found the hand break stuck on the near side. after a bit more exploration the cable had been damaged so it could not realease. to cut a long story short they freed everything up and offered to order in new shoes and cable. unfortunately for them i am very loyal to a local garage in my home village so will use them but i was very impressed with there service i was there around an hour and they charged me £30 and got my wheel balanced and enjoyed an average cup of sugary hot fluid.
