I have just had my 07 FL2 serviced by my main dealer at 74k miles and they say it has an oil leak and needs a new sump. Now I have had many cars before and done complete rebuilds but never have I come cross an oil leak needing a new sump. Gasket maybe. i suspect it may be something more sinister, but the dealer has quoted £750 for the job. Has anyone experienced this before? The usual reason for replacing a sump on a relatively new car is that the original has been damaged by an impact of some sort. Whilst it's not uncommon for a LR to take the odd knock if used off road the FL2 has a reasonably substantial steel plate protecting the engine bay and the sump, making sump damage relatively unlikely.

You don't say how long you've had the car, but if you don't know its history perhaps the first thing to do is have a look underneath to check that the protective plate is in place and look for any evidence of damage. Inspection of the sump itself would, however, require removal of the protective plate (heavy!). But as far as I'm aware FL2s don't have a problem with sumps or sump damage.

Why not just ask the dealer exactly why it needs a new sump?

I have replaced sumps on older cars (not Land Rovers) as they used to rust out (particularly Ford Fiestas) but on an FL2 this should not be an issue. If the leak is from the sump thread, the suspicious cynic in me would suspect an over enthusiastic gorilla tightened the sump plug! John

I had to have the sump resealed at last years service as it had developed a leak. Apparently they do not have a gasket but use sealing compound. I cannot remember the price as it was carried out under the extended guarantee but I do remember making the comment it seemed expensive for replacing a gasket. That is when I was told it did not have a gasket. Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

The sump plate is undamaged and other than towing a caravan across the odd field it has never been off road. The dealer tells me the seal is bonded and the sump is always bent whilst removing it. I am not convinced it is the sump especially if it is bonded. He then went on to say if it is not that, then it is probably an engine seal which would leak due to a blocked engine breather, which would mean a new rocker cover (as well as the seal). This is too many variables for me, especially at main dealer prices. I thought they were meant to be the experts. 07 Freeleander 2 SE

seems odd to be the sump if undamaged, don't think our workshop have ever replaced one well certainly not in the last year.

RRP on replacing sump seal/sealant is £410.00 add cost of a sump on top which is £120.00

Maybe you should pay a visit to an indy? £750 seems a lot to me, I take it there would be an oil change involved but how much is a sump and how long would it take to change it?

i had a new sump and sump extension peace last December for oil leaking between engine and gearbox just had second service and guess what i have a oil leak between engine and gearbox so going in tomorrow to remove the gearbox with a view to getting it replaced 1995 P38 now dead

Might I suggest a little DIY work for research and somthing that's not at all difficult.
Either do this bit yourself or find a local friend to assist.

Remove the steel sump guard, it's easy with only 6 bolts and needing a 13mm spanner.
Leave the guard off for now.
.
Buy degreaser such as Jizer; use a low cost paintbrush and scrub the whole of the sump and surrounding areas leave to soak then hose off with water.
.
You may have to repeat this a day later.
.
Now you can run the car and see where the leak really is.
.
NOW go to the Indy for the proper diagnosis and repair estimate!

May I suggest that it's highly unlikely to be the sump, the are glued on like sh** to a blanket; you need to crowbar them off. I had a real fight to get the sump of my old engine.

The real culprit could be the crank oil seals or the oil filter housing or oil cooler pipework

You don't need to be a whiz mechanic for the imvestigation bit.

If you clean all and 'let the Dog see the Rabbit' at the Indy you might just get a low cost repair!

In the unlikely event that it is the sump then after crowbarring off I straightened my bent flange and then bought thick gasket card and made a new gasket (just like the old days!), and used gasket sealer on refitting.

This is also a fairly easy job for a home mechanic to do.

When the leak is say crank seals or the oil filter housing body it starts to need a competent mechanic.
.
Taking a worst case that it is the flywheel side crank seal then expect an expensive repair as the engine will have to come out; for the local garage the engine DOES come out the top readily leaving all the gearbox, drive shafts and suspension intact. (I've done it on my freelander!).

Taking the easy case, it might be that the oil filter wasn't screwed tight last service.
