Floor cleaning.

Well, I've finally sorted out my very first shop.
It was scarey going self employed, but being a Locum could only serve me so long.
So I've bitten the bullet and got myself a little shop.
It was a former children's nursery and the place has a mixture of carpet and vinyl safety flooring (the type that goes up the wall- like hospital flooring). In many places the carpet is stuck over the vinyl floor. It pulls away very easily. However, there is a load of glue. Do any of you lovelies know how I can go about getting this off?
Thanks
MM

Hi mm,
I am a floor layer by trade, if you can get the carpet off and leave the backing behind, you may be able to scrape the foam/backing off using a scraper, alternatively if it's just adhesive residue you could try a polishing/ scrubbing machine with a coarse pad on it , that may work.
In short there is no easy way to do it

Hi Andy,
Thanks for that. It just appears to be the glue. Do you know of any solvents that might work?
Otherwise it looks like I'll be hiring a machine.
Or hair dryer and paint scraper?
Thanks
MM

Just out of curiosity MM, have you set up your new shop as a sole trader, partnership or Ltd company? I assume sole trader as you put self employed but I thought it's best to be sure to be sure LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Try find glue and tar remover? Your local DIY store might have some, or your local car cleaning shop

Try a small inconspicuous area first just in case it act with the flooring

Hi Npinks,
That would be great if I could try some. I could send you a spill proof kit (ones we use for pathology specimens). They contain a small receptacle in a crush proof box with absorbent?

Doc,
Dictatorship all the way! ALWAYS happy for staff input but have seen too many disastrous partnerships.
It will be a Limited company. Although that's proving to be a bit of a chore! The RCVS have to approve the name cos it contains the word "Vet". They have approved it to me and registered the practice. However, the solicitors haven't received their paperwork.
I must at this point plug Lloyds bank. My business manager has gone way above and beyond to help me. Even meeting me in a dodgy layby on a Sunday morning to sign paperwork!
I am so excited about the venture. It's my opportunity to provide the best care I can, without ripping people off!

Ah yes MM, the choice of name and associated shenanigans! Covered all that in the first few weeks of BLP. Getting clearance for certain words, checking Companies House website for similar names.

Indeed, when it comes to partnerships, unless it's an LLP, partners are of course liable without limit for any debts whereas you will have the peace of mind of the limitation (not that we ever want to see that being used! Best wishes and all that).

I suspect you are already aware of the personal guarantee that some creditors may seek when dealing with limited companies. A way of side-stepping the limitation. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Would definitely recommend the tardis option. Use with a chemical resistant spray head, mist on, leave it a little and apply elbow grease!

Shifts all sorts but stinks to high heaven. I'd use it with a mask or be well ventilated when you do. I only use it outside on cars and that's bad enough.

B&Q also do something similar and your average white spirit would do the same job for a floor.

Thank you so much.
It's a very exciting time. I would urge anyone who is thinking about setting up on their own to go for it.
I did a business plan, had accountants do financial forecasts and with the unswerving support of my business manager at Lloyds... It's really going to happen. My own shop, my chance to do something right and give something back to the community.
I'll report on my floor cleaning activities!
Many many thanks
MM

Most adhesive used for carpets is water based or acrylic, be careful with solvents in large amounts as it will affect the vinyl that's down
