The effect of the video, regardless of the looks of the car, is mostly ruined by diesel rattle. Any car, no matter how great, can never be cool when it's engine sounds like that (prior to him zooming off to the modded exhaust note).

Hence all the great cars such as Aston Martin, are petrol Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Have to disagree their Dr Laughing car sounds way better than what it looks! It's bloody horrible looking. So you've never heard of a TDV8 Rolling with laughter

You have to modify a diesel big time with tricksy exhausts to get it to sound like that! Petrol will always be far superior when it comes to sound. Otherwise Ferrari and Lambo etc would ditch their V8's and V12 petrols for oil burners!

The last generation M3 CSL made an amazing sound from the air going into the engine let alone the exhaust note! LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

must agree with the Doc, petrol all the way !!

a performance engine/car is all about power/sound/revs/even smell, and diesels just dont't do that.

diesels are for low down torque and economy.

I reckon that the sound is just about the only benefit in real-world driving from having a petrol engine rather than diesel. Admittedly all the preferences are purely personal but I think diesel is best because:

It smells better, both as a liquid and the exhaust gases.
For all normal (i.e. not high-speed) driving the low-down torque is infinitely preferable to the need for revs.
It's inherently safer in the event of a spillage or crash.
Diesel engines run more efficiently and are therefore better for the environment and my pocket.
There's no faffing about with ignition circuits and spark plugs, both vulnerable to water ingress.

Diesel gets my vote every time. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

In LR land I agree as an overall preference but when it comes to the soundtrack, petrol will always be the king. Also, no matter how much torque a diesel can muster, it runs out of revs too quickly for my liking no matter how fast. It is nice to hold on to gears for longer for a more spirited drive.

The BMW 5 series top end diesel (550d?) is tremendously quick and agile apparently but it is never going to have the soundtrack to match the M5.
