Wheel bearings age...

Hi all been looking through search but nothing that matches what I'm after...

Could a wheel bearing go at just 45k please?
Got lot of noise and vibration especially at around 40-50 but there all the time, found out today after having wheel swapped around that it's a LOT noisier on driver front side ( first time sat as passenger )

All tyres a 9mm all over pressure smack on all round, GG AT3. silentish up to now Neutral

Any suggestions gratefully received.

You can never discount it. Any mechanical device can fail at any time.
Although quality control in their manufacture is usually very good, the odd one that isn't up to standard can still get through.
Or it could have been damaged somehow through the 45K miles.
Best to get it jacked up and feel for play or roughness. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Thanks for that, when we swapped wheels around today there was hardly any movement when trying to wobble them seemed pretty rigid Crying or Very sad If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Personally I've yet to see one of these style wheel bearings with any free play in them (I'm not in the trade) but I have changed a few noisy ones. In every one the noise was caused (in my opinion) by a distinct lack of grease with no obvious signs of leakage, probably just poor quality control. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

An engineer once pointed out the obvious to me about testing wheel bearings which is that when the car is on the ground the pressure is on the bottom of the inner race surface (due to the weight of the car) whilst when jacked up it's on the top (due to the weight of the wheel hanging off it) so it's possible to have a noisy patch on the bottom of the inner race surface that doesn't show up when you test it jacked up. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Check your CV joints (with the wheel jacked up) 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

If you change one side do you have to change other side?

Which is why you need a set of 'chassis ears' to diagnose bearing noise. They will tell you almost instantly which bearing is making the noise (if it is a bearing). (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Some will say yes, some will say no! If you're happy to pay for it to be done do it (preventative maintenance) but not mandatory! (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

I would say no for a modern car. They almost never fail or need maintenance on most models, even at high mileage (unless perhaps abused off roading in water or launching boats maybe).

Classic cars, you'd have to pack, adjust, and replace the seals at regular intervals and replace the bearing on condition at that time.
