Changed mine today. No problems but after 5 years and 70,000 miles I thought I might as well. After seeing the picture on the PC screen I had to look again. What I thought was iron filings were just plastic sawdust after I had opened it up using a hacksaw. Embarassed Filter was a bit dirty but after that age/mileage I suppose it could be expected. I ran it briefly with the bottle off and pumped out what remaining fluid I could. Topped up with the correct fluid. Can't say I notice any difference but for £26 it's just peace of mind.
