Well I'm back and guess what! It's repaired.

No new unit, I just dried out the micro switch with a hair dryer applied a liberal amount of PTFE grease around the back of the switch and the rubber boot to prevent water ingress and after 5 days and some heavy rain all is still good.  Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi 05 Liquid Blue

Where's the micro switch? is it behind the trim inside the boot lid or can you get to it from under the exterior handle?
Just want to be prepared for when mine goes
