Lucky? or not!

I have now completed 247,500 miles in a 57 plate SE with extras. Apart from service items (brakes etc) the only significant work that has been done is rear wheel bearings @150k, rear shockers @ 200k, and today it had a low level diff repair.
Being a bit anal, I have kept a record of everything and overall including towing (horse trailer and caravan) I have got 36.5mpg out of it.
OK so I don't do a lot of off road work and it isn't a rally car so I don't drive it like one but I can't fault it - it has been fantastic!
If I chucked it away now the total cost of ownership including fuel and VAT is around 28p/mile.
So am I lucky or not?

Thank you for sharing your experience, LL. With mine presently at 102,000 miles your tale fills me with hope for the future! NB: mine has already had rear wheel bearings and low level diff repair done whilst under warranty. (<75,000 miles) The clutch and DMF are still original. I cannot get close to your fuel figures however (see my sig below).

Hopefully yours will last - I'm ready for another quarter million.
The fuel consumption is based on the actual total fuel used not the onboard computer (told you I was anal about it!).
When towing, I get around 22.5mpg. The diff repair has worked fine although the dealer was unsure it would because of potential wear on the gears - now running very quiet.

There seems to be a wide variation in fuel consumption figures from vehicles of same spec and vintage. Yours and mine for instance! You will see my fuellings are all recorded on the spritmonitor.de site - I see I did get 36.2mpg on the latest fill up though! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Hi
I also monitor fuel consumption by volume rather than on board computer. Highest (worst) consumption was 27.12mpg in November 2011. Lowest (best) consumption was 37.71mpg in August 2012.
The biggest effect (other than the weight of the foot on the pedal) is the kind of driving with the best consumption achieved on trips to and around Scotland. Worst consumption is predictably stop/start driving around town. Supermarket fuel has a negative effect but luckily there is a branded garage nearby that is normally within 1 pence of the surrounding supermarkets. V power has a positive effect but not enough to warrant the extra cost and distance to the nearest Shell station. My feeling is that 2SO has a positive effect but I don't drive enough consistant tanks of fuel to compare. I've not found it to have a detrimental effect on mpg.

Agreed, BB, short runs are a killer for Freelander 2 fuel consumption. Too many of mine are! I too did not notice a great difference using V Power. I usually use Jet as it is the handiest (and cheapest) filling station for me. I have however been using 2SO regularly for over a year now. There has been no noticeable effect on fuel consumption but what really changed was the results of the smoke test on MOT - almost halved after using 2SO! So at least I can have a smug look knowing my emissions are less than many others! Cool 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

LL's mileage & reliabilty says it all really. Mine is hopefully following in its wheeltracks! Great cars, maybe the best I have had. Could not consider going back to a "normal" car now! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
