United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 S Manual Aintree Green
Starting issue

Hi all,
My new to me 07 car has refused to start tonight, have been using my van as working in London and leaving early, so parked car in car park on sun and used van since, I did get in the car and start it yesterday, but today nothing, all unlocked ok dash lit up but when I pressed button , noises from passenger footwell and warning triangle on dashboard and htc fault message!
Am thinking/ hoping its a battery issue, as I don't know old it is, seems to have another earth lead already attached, assumed previous owner had already done it, any ideas?
Andy
Ok after a quick search it seems most likely that it is the earth lead, the other lead coming off the battery is sort of braided so may not be what I thought it was,
Two questions ;
Where can I get a lead made up? Would local car parts shop do this?
Can. I use a single jump lead connect to earth on battery and then to earth on car just to get it started and get it home so I can do it properly
Thanks andy

Make sure you've got the clutch right down - it's easy to think it's down when it's not fully. You mentioned a noise from the passenger footwell - there's a fusebox down there - check all the connections are secure. If that fails try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes.

Thanks pab, clutch definitely down, and looked at fuse box.
Managed to have a look at the car this afternoon, still was'nt keen to start , so changed secondary earth strap, one that had been put on was braided Ali type , bought some 25mm copper cable and used that , still no difference, so disconnected battery and left it a while, no change, finally managed to start it with booster box attached to battery!, so thinking maybe something didn't shut down properly when I turned it off the other day.
Battery appears to be original one though , so off to get a new one tomorrow,
Andy

Check out Eurocarparts for battery, as they often have good discounts: www.eurocarparts.com. There are threads on here about which battery to buy.
The early models suffered from occasional flat battery. A lot of causes have been suggested, which include:
not double locking;
leaving headlight switch in auto position;
ditto wiper switch;
opening boot with fob and not double locking afterwards;
using Bluetooth phone after switching off engine.
The battery on my MY07 was getting a bit tired last winter, so that may indeed be your issue.

Also check with Land rover as last year I changed my battery and not only was LR cheeper than Halfords and the other local parts suppliers it was also the correct size ie all the other parts shops sell you a battery that will do but you will find they are bit smaller in Ah and CCA, so why buy a smaller battery for more money?

Fitted new battery today, as I think it was original one that was in it, though it started ok today at -1 , can't afford to be let down again, seagull1 , rang local or dealer , hunters in Guildford and there price was very nearly double what I paid at local auto factors, so hopefully just a blip and combination of old battery or something not shutting down.

With a new battery you should be fine, but it's worth bearing in mind the points I made above. The other factor likely to affect a car of this age is the glow-plugs, which are probably knackered by now, but that should just delay cold starting, not prevent it. Btw if you add the details of your car to your profile, they will show on your posts (mouse over the FR2 icon to the left). This will help forum members to help you if you have further queries.

Excellent - that's saved you a big job, as they are not easy.
